1 | Bootstrap Salvation? | Eph 2:8 | Hank | 63870
Humanism teaches a "bootstrap salvation" of sorts. The humanistic worldview asserts that man is captain of his own soul, the master of his fate. Major world religions, except Christianity, teach that works are a vital ingredient in the salvation forumla. Even some Christians believe that salvation hinges upon some combination of faith and good works, even though the Bible states plainly that salvation is the gift of God, a product of His grace made manifest through faith in His Son who paid the price by going to the Cross. The question is: Why do you suppose it is so difficult for some to come to grips with the biblical truth of John 3:16 and Ephesians 2:8,9? The biblical view of salvation is so unlike the views of humanism and pagan religions. Could it be that some professing Christians who insist on adding works as a requisite of salvation are being influenced by secular views without being fully aware of it? Can we think like the world thinks, allow ourselves to be influenced by prevailing worldviews, and yet follow Christ and His teachings also? In essence, do you think that there is a trend that modern Christians and churches tend to think more in harmony with the worldview than with God's view -- not only on the "good works" topic but in other areas as well? Let's try to keep this "on topic," by backing up views with what the Bible teaches. --Hank
2 | Bootstrap Salvation? | Eph 2:8 | jlpangilinan | 63872
Hank, To those who claim that works is the ingredient for salvation, they usually back up thier claim with scriptures, some of those is this: Ec 12:14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. Re 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. One of the statement of Paul the same apostle that taught the we have save by faith alone: 1Co 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. Here they get the idea that even how deep is your faith as mentioned even you can removed mountain and have not charity, then we still nothing. Id like to get your comments on those verses. Hello, Johnny. So many, many times have I [and numerous others] attempted to exegete on these pages what the Bible clearly teaches about the relationship of faith and works, that I am indisposed to continue repeating myself. What do YOU think about the verses you cited? Do you think they make a case for works being an "ingredient" of salvation? And if you do, how do they do it? And if you don't think the verses are speaking of salvation, what then are they speaking about? And how do you correlate them with such passages as Ephesians 2:8-10, Romans 3-6, and others? Does the Bible teach that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus or doesn't it? [Sometimes it's more fun to ask questions than answer them :-) ] --Hank
