1 | Does God hear me when I pray? | Eph 1:6 | jalanlambert | 177839
This past Wed. our preacher said that if we don't ask for forgiveness from our sins, God will not hear our prayers even if we have been saved for years. I had always thought that once we get saved God remembers our sins no more. That they are as far as the East is from the West. Does God hear a Christians prayers even though they might have sin in their live?

Hi jalanlambert, Let me answer your question with a question, if I may be so bold :-) Does God hear the pray, "show me my sin"? Isn't this when we most need God in our lives, helping us, when we are struggling with sin? Is this the time He turns His back on us? Do we sin sins of which we are not aware? You are correct - all sins, past, present, future, are forgiven, and put away. Paul wrote to the Ephesians "we are accepted in the Beloved." Some may answer this question quoting Psalm 66:15, "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me." Given the verb tenses, many translations read (as the ESV) "If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened." JFB refer to this as "see iniquity with pleasure". And while we do sin, even though we are born again, "cherishing sin" is rather inconsistant with "a new creation." We have been created after true righteousness and holiness, and we cherish God, not sin. That notwithstanding. . . 1 John 3:18-21 My little children, let us not love in word, or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. (19) And in this we shall know that we are of the truth, and shall persuade our hearts before Him, (20) that if our heart accuses us, we know that God is greater than our heart and knows all things. (21) Beloved, if our heart does not accuse us, we have confidence with God. If we have not dealt with current sin, well, have you ever tried to have a conversation with a friend in your living room while there is an elephant in the room? Its rather difficult to actually have a relationship until the elephant is taken care of. And that is what sin is like, in my view. If we are ignoring sin, rest assured that God is not, and will be constantly calling it to our attention until we give in. He will chastise us if He needs to. It will not just go away. But neither will it overcome the death of Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world. Love in Christ, Mark |

3 | Does God hear me when I pray? | Eph 1:6 | jalanlambert | 177842
Hi Mark, Thanks for your insight, and scripture. I agree with you that sin in our lives is when we need God most. I believe that the Holy Spirit is busy making us aware of such sin. It is a really great opportunity for us to grow in our faith and learn dependence on the Lord. Our pastor said that because of the unconfessed sin, that a believer has no access to God until this is corrected. I disagree, but wanted to hear from others. How could a christian not be able to communicate with God because of unconfessed sin, yet if that same person died in that condition they would have access to God through the finished work of Jesus Christ and would immediately be in the presence of God. That analogy seems to be contradictory. Please help with any thoughts you might have or any scripture reference you might know of. jal |

4 | Does God hear me when I pray? | Eph 1:6 | mark d seyler | 177843
Hi Jal, You make a great point - how can we be allowed in God's presence, yet not be able to speak to Him? The Bible even says we are with Him in heaven now: Colossians 3:3-4 For you died, and your life has been hidden with Christ in God. (4) Whenever Christ our life is revealed, then also you will be revealed with Him in glory. and Ephesians 2:4-6 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, (5) even we being dead in deviations, He made us alive together with Christ (by grace you are being saved), (6) and raised us up together and seated us together in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus, Your comments also remind me of Hebrews: Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. (15) For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. (16) Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. What could be more clear? Love in Christ, Mark |
