1 | Basis of election and predestination? | Eph 1:5 | Michael T. | 197092
That's good. Are you aware that many people assume that although God predestinated His elect people before creation, He did so because God suppposedly selected those people who He saw would believe. My reading of Ephesians 1:3-11 and Ephesiand 2:8 show that these Scriptures exclude and oppose this theory of "election on a basis of foreseen faith" because the saving faith which we place in Christ is itself the gift of God. In other words, salvation is by grace from start to finish and God's sovereignty determined and assures salvation throughout. THere's been a lot of controversy over the years about the part that "free-will" plays in salvation. What are your views on this issue? Michael |

2 | Basis of election and predestination? | Eph 1:5 | New Creature | 197174
I see in 1 Pet chapter 1 where there is a sort of indication in the wording that "election is according to the foreknowledge of God." 1 Pet 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the ELECT who are sojourners of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 1 Pet 1:2 ACCORDING TO THE FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD Therefore I need to ask myself and you to consider this question. What is it that God has foreknowledge of that makes election according to His foreknowledge? |

3 | Basis of election and predestination? | Eph 1:5 | Morant61 | 197175
Greetings New Creature! I would highly recommend not pursuing this particular topic. From long experience, I know that both sides of this issue are pretty set on their positions and no amount of discussion will change either side. :-) I would recommend two good books on this topic though: "Life in the Son" and "Elect in the Son" by Robert Shank. He does an excellent, and through, study on election from the perspective of one who used to be Calvinistic, but was convinced otherwise. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Thanks for the advice Tim. First of all I realize the truth of what you say. Secondly, I don't plan on hotly pursing this topic. I am only going to interject with short bits which are mainly food for thought. Lastly I have read Shank's work several times. Yours in His precious name |

6 | Basis of election and predestination? | Eph 1:5 | New Creature | 197249
I thought they were excellent and uninfluenced by the necessities of man's theology. I was very interested in how Shank presented a Christocentric election. I also loved how Shank handled the topic of the reprobate, especilayy when he stated; "If no man, either elect or reprobate, can resist the will of God, against whom or what is the Spirit striving when He "strives with man"? Another great comment from Shank I enjoyed was: "While the election of particular men is contingent on the condition of faith, the election of the body is unconditional in the sense that election is an eternal purpose of God - the kingdom purpose of God which antedates creation." |
