1 | Automatic Holy Spirit? | Eph 1:13 | charis | 27259
Dear Saints and Fellow Forumers, Greetings in the name of Jesus! Many use this Scripture to prove that we are indwelt (filled) with the Holy Spirit the moment we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. Yet, I also hear many saying that if a person 'backslides,' it is really that he was never really saved to begin with. How can we reconcile these two common beliefs? Is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit truly 'automatic,' synonymous with salvation? What of Luke 11:13 NASB, "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?" ? How can we on earth know that a person is saved? I know that we can 'look at the fruit' of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22,23), but what of those that HAVE manifest this fruit, yet through depression or temptation yielded to sin and returned to their former ways? Were they 'never saved?' (To be fair, I find it hard to believe that a person can go through multiple saved-unsaved-saved...states.) Blessings, one and all, this blessed season! In Christ Jesus, charis |

2 | Automatic Holy Spirit? | Eph 1:13 | Searcher56 | 27260
Scripture ... Acts 2:4; 4:8, 31; 9:17; 13:9. 52; Eph 5:18 ... Charis, greetings to you across the ocean waves. I see, based on the above passages, that we are filled with the Spirit when we are saved ... and we may need a refilling. He is in us, but, we are not using Him like we should. When we sin, we do lose fellowship with the Lord (1 John 1) but never the relationship. I think we are not usuing the Spirit as we should when we sin ans until we ask for forgiveness. We do struggle with sin (Rom 7:14ff) ... our former ways, maybe even new. Wakata? Batola Sutebi |

3 | Automatic Holy Spirit? | Eph 1:13 | charis | 27261
Dear Sutepano, Greetings to you in Jesus' name! I don't disagree with the flow of your conclusions, my friend, but I do not see from the Scripture references that the indwelling or baptism of the Holy Spirit is synonymous and synchronous with the moment of salvation. In fact, the term 'refilling' seems to negate a 'sealing' of our relationship with God. If we are indeed 'sealed' by the third person of the Godhead, this should be permanent, right? It should not run out like gas tanks or wallets, and should not wear out like soles or paint. Personally, I think that my thoughts on the 'security of the believer' are more secure and permanent than some! :-) But I cannot *equate* saving knowlege of/by God with our pursuit of/ obedience to/ and reliance upon the Holy Spirit. These two relationships seem to be connected, but not the same thing. If I may say so, this seems similar to your phrase 'we are not using Him like we should,' though some (not me!) might take offense at the word 'using.' I agree with you that we can lose fellowship with God, and even some or all of our 'reward' in Him, but not our relationship with Him, which was soley initiated by Him in grace. (I Corinthians 3:14,15) Blessings, my brother, in Christ Jesus, charis |
