1 | better to marry than to burn | 1 Cor 7:9 | DocTrinsograce | 168194
Dear Brother Mark, Yes, I have heard preaching that asserted the "burn in judgment" interpretation as well. Of course, I'm not the student of Greek as are you and Brother Tim. However, none of the occurrences of that word in Scripture appear to have anything to do with hell fire. The one that comes closest is Revelation 3:18, but that is talking about a refining fire, not the wrath of God. Doesn't the rendering by the translators, as well as Strong and Thayer, afford greater confidence for us? In Him, Doc |

2 | better to marry than to burn | 1 Cor 7:9 | mark d seyler | 168197
Hi Doc, Naturally, I look to the real scholars to help me understand what I read. The translators, the commentators, teachers, pastors, and so on, teach me. Of course, no matter how learned or how revered the scholars, their words are not God-breathed Scripture itself, so I will always look to the text as the primary source. When all of the translators and commentators and pastor/teachers are in agreement, with each other and with the Scripture, there is much confidence. But even should they disagree with Scripture, I still have confidence in the Scripture. Love in Christ, Mark |
