2 | better to marry than to burn | 1 Cor 7:9 | DocTrinsograce | 168189
Dear Brother Mark, It is in keeping with the context of the passage (cf 1 Corinthians 7:2). The same word (also translated "burn") is used similarly in 2 Corinthians 11:29. This metaphorical meaning of the Greek word is confirmed by Strong, Thayer, and Vine. In addition, this interpretation is agreed upon by Augustine, John Calvin, John Gill, Matthew Henry, Albert Barnes, and JFB. (Curiously enough, John Wesley and John Darby do not mention the verse at all.) The ESV -- and this agrees with the NASB and Amplified -- translates the verse: But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to be aflame with passion. (1 Corinthians 7:9) Was there another interpretation that you thought might fit? In Him, Doc |

3 | better to marry than to burn | 1 Cor 7:9 | mark d seyler | 168191
Hi Doc, No, I didn't have anything else in mind. I have long understood the verse to mean just that. I was just wondering if there was something definitive in the text that I had missed. I know that many commentators have given that interpretation, although that does not carry the same weight as if there were something actually in the text to specifiy this. Tim pointed out that the verb for "to burn" is in the middle voice, of intransative or reflexive action. So to me, this would not indicate the burning of judgement, which is what I have heard as the alternative interpretation of this verse, since that would take a passive verb, and would rather read, as many have rendered it, as the ESV, to be aflame with passion. 4 | better to marry than to burn | 1 Cor 7:9 | DocTrinsograce | 168194
Dear Brother Mark, Yes, I have heard preaching that asserted the "burn in judgment" interpretation as well. Of course, I'm not the student of Greek as are you and Brother Tim. However, none of the occurrences of that word in Scripture appear to have anything to do with hell fire. The one that comes closest is Revelation 3:18, but that is talking about a refining fire, not the wrath of God. Doesn't the rendering by the translators, as well as Strong and Thayer, afford greater confidence for us? In Him, Doc |

5 | better to marry than to burn | 1 Cor 7:9 | mark d seyler | 168197
Hi Doc, Naturally, I look to the real scholars to help me understand what I read. The translators, the commentators, teachers, pastors, and so on, teach me. Of course, no matter how learned or how revered the scholars, their words are not God-breathed Scripture itself, so I will always look to the text as the primary source. When all of the translators and commentators and pastor/teachers are in agreement, with each other and with the Scripture, there is much confidence. But even should they disagree with Scripture, I still have confidence in the Scripture. Love in Christ, Mark |
