Perhaps your confusion comes because you stopped reading to soon, consider the rest of the this passage. Matthew 7:1-2 "Judge not, that you be not judged. [2] For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. What Jesus is saying is we tend to use a different standard looking at others than we use when we look at ourselves. We will criticize a mother for the behavior of her children but in doing so we are guilt of gossip and/or back biting. Scripture tells us if we see a brother is sin we are to try to get him out of it Gal 6:1. That requires judging to know if he is in sin or not. Where we are not to judge is on motivation and or salvation. Romans 14:4 Who are you to judge another's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. 4 | Who are we to judge someones character? | 1 Cor 5:12 | EdB | 126567 | ||
Nowhere in scripture are we told not to judge sin. We are told not judge others with a different standard than we use for ourselves. Neither are we to judge motivation or salvation, since only God knows the heart. Your absolutely right in Gal 6:1 we are told to restore a brother that has been caught in sin. For us to do that we have to able to judge if he was in fact in sin or not. People take the judge not position because they don't want to hear what they already know that they are deep in sin and need to clean up their act. However there are times when people in false piety have looked down their holy appearing noses at others in an attempt to make themselves look better. EdB |
