I think you will get different answers. The main point would be to allow God to have total control of your life. If you know that God wants you to quit then you can have faith that God will help you. I can tell you from experience that I went through the same question when I was saved. I smoked for several months before I even thought about whether smoking was a sin or not. I was born again and still smoked. There came a point in my spiritual growth within a few months when I realized God was convicting me of this unhealthy habit so I began to pray about quiting. To make a long story short the Lord taught me some great truths about resisting sin. In a nutshell I learned that I needed to be willing to suffer in the flesh to cease from sin. I told the Lord that I would suffer withdrawal of nicotine even to to point of death than to deliberately sin against him and grieve His heart with known sin. I went through a week of withdrawal and then I found the smell of ciggarettes very irritating and obnoxious. God will deliver you if you are willing to suffer for Him. This is how we should live for the Lord. Is sexual temptation strong for you? Then be willing to suffer the denial of yielding to it even to the point of death.. what will happen? You will get victory over it and it will become offensive to you outside of marriage. Name any type of sin, if you are willing to suffer in the flesh to cease from it, you will soon be free and strong in that area of your life. Only those that keep yielding to it stay addicted. God Bless you as you follow Him. |

3 | Is smoking a sin? | 1 Cor 3:16 | saltnlight | 90794 | ||
My question would be is addiction a sin... We are to be led by the spirit. This is just one of the many fleshly desires that lead to not being completely spirit led which is a sin. In the areas of smoking, overeating, drinking, to name just a few, these areas are ones which we need to question ourselves... can I live without...smoking, overeating, a drink? This will clarify the attitude of the heart, if the answer is no, then I would say it would be sin. We are his workmanship, created for good works in Christ Jesus. Are we being prevented by our own fleshly desire or sin, in becoming all he has for us? He wants all of us not just what we decide we want to surrender. We all struggle in the "gray" areas. I myself have struggled in the are a my weight for years. I have been asking God to show me how to completely surrender to Him in this and other areas that on the outside seem "small" but are really "big" issues of surrender. He is faithful to answer your prayers, seek him, surrender all, take up your cross...He will be faithful to answer! |

Dear Saltnlight, Welcome to the forum sister! You asked "We are his workmanship, created for good works in Christ Jesus. Are we being prevented by our own fleshly desire or sin, in becoming all he has for us?" I think it is important to understand the full meaning of the verse. Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. a) For we are His workmanship... indicates that God is not waiting for us to work on ourselves, but that, He is the one who is doing the work in us. We are (so to speak) under construction. (b)created in Christ Jesus for good works... The key is "in Christ". (c) We are, on a daily basis, being used by our Maker to accomplish good works which God prepared beforehand so that WE WOULD walk in them. The fact that our good works were pre-ordained, tells me, that God does not rely on my spiritual maturity, but rather, my dependence for spiritual maturity is upon Him! I must hasten to add that the fact that God is soverign does not abrogate my responsibiity to strive in my goal to be a profitable servant. So... my answer to your question is a resounding NO. Is 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, 'My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure'; Your Brother, John (Reformed) |

Dear Brother John, I do realize that it is God that works within us for his good pleasure. So, addiction is not sin? Anything that we replace God with is sin, isn't it? If we can not let a day pass without smoking, drinking, overeating, overspending...fill in the blank...are we not addicted to that behavior. Yes, we can ask God to change us, but will he just "poof" make our cigarettes, alcohol, extra food, shopping malls, disappear because he is working his will within us? No, I don't believe in our flesh we have to strive to bring about "good works". But I do believe that with freedom, comes responsibility. A responsibility to follow Gods word. Paul does encourage us in Romans 6:12 "not to let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as intruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life: and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteosusness. For sin shall not be your mater, because you are not under law but under grace." Obviously, we have a part in not allowing sin to reign in our bodies. Looking forward to your response... |

"So, addiction is not sin"! Are you serious? Are you addressing this question to a particular individual? One can be addicted to anything; Sex, drugs, strong drink, gambling, shopping, on and on. ... and what seems to be one of todays favorites, PLEASURE and self indulgence in general. Does not the addicted become a slave to what he is addicted? If so, then, does not the addiction dictate the ways of the addicted. Has he not turned from the service of God to that of his addiction? KJV Heb 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, George |

Brother George, I think you are generalizing too much. I never heard of anybody addicted to shopping. If ever there is somebody who shops daily, I believe it is more of a hobby than addiction. And if a person can do such a hobby, I would say the person is well blessed. Your support verse :" If we sin willfully after that we received the knowledge of truth... " is the essence of the discussion! What is the truth? Is smoking a sin? To you, it is yes, But is it the truth? We all know, smoking was never mentioned in the Bible. And because of that, we are left with our own understanding and interpretation of the Word as guided by the Holy Spirit God Bless, Ngop |

As believers "everything is permissible for me" but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me" but I will not be mastered by anything. Our "goal" is to be Christlike, granted this is not immediate, as we are running a race. 1 Cor. 9:24-27...Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate(exercises self control) in all things..." My desire is not to condemn but encourage, for I too am but clay being molded day by day by the Potter. As I seek to encourage, it builds up my own desire (the holy spirit at work in me) to run the race, to be more Christlike, to excercise self control in all things...It is only by His strength and power we can even begin to overcome those things that bind us. As Paul wrote.. "...but I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified." Let's run! |

Dear Saltnlight, The same Pau1 also wrote... Rom 7:15-21 "For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good." Which one of us does not find himself in this passage? It is Paul's confession of his own powerlessness over his sins. This passage should burn upon our hearts our absolute dependence on Christ. Oh! "Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? I am conviced that God alone is the agent of my sanctification. On one hand, I may be distressed over certain sins and pray that God will give me whatever it takes to overcome them. On the other hand, God knows exactly what areas of my life need changing BEFORE He answers my prayer. Rom 9:31 but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law. Rom 9:32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone Confess your sins and pray for grace to be set free from their bondage. Trust in Christ and what He has done, placing no confidence in your flesh. Rejoice in your adoption. Bro. John |
