1 | Can people still be a pharisee? | 1 Cor 1:30 | michael03 | 192942
Can people today still be "pharisee" and "sadducee" people? If so, what would be the best scripture to give to them to help them understand. Jehovah Shalom, michael03 |

Hi, Michael... No, the major parties of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes are long gone. The destruction of the Temple, coupled with the diaspora, made them moot. Consequently, they pretty much vanish as entities more than 19 centuries ago. Rabbinical Judaism, though, does have its roots in Pharisaical thinking. In a sense, therefore, the Pharisees sort of won the day. Of course, even this is a broad generalization. Today there are four major "denominations" in Judaism: Orthodox, Hasidic, Conservative, and Reformed. Yet it is hard to find agreement amongst or even within those groupings. You'll find disagreement in thought, faith, and practice. You'll discover that even Zionism is hotly debated. Members of one group will even deny that the members of another group are Jews at all. Michale, the rest of the Western gentile world is pretty much dominated by Greek thinking. Hence, I believe, your request for a verse "to help them understand." Remember this verse? "For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles." (1 Corinthians 1:22-23 ESV) That statement of Paul pretty much says it all regarding Jews and gentiles. The lost gentiles you encounter will think the gospel message is simply silly. The lost Jews you encounter have a huge block that they won't be able to get past. "...but to those WHO ARE CALLED, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men." (1 Corinthians 1:24-25 ESV, my emphasis) So, Michael, pray, live the truth, speak the truth, and let God do the calling. Therein is our hope to bring the lost to Christ. We have the easy part. God has the difficult part. It is a lot less confusing if we are careful not to get mixed up over responsibilities. :-) In Him, Doc |

3 | Can people still be a pharisee? | 1 Cor 1:30 | michael03 | 192944
Hello, Doc. Check this out. The pharisees top "flaws" was being hypocritical. They thought that if the outside was clean, the inside was, and that they were above others.Matt. 23:25,28. Now, I am not saying that there is a sect of them running around, but that the attitude of them is still prevalent in our society today. Also, remember the pharisee that struck his chest, thanking the Lord that he was not like the other man? Jehovah Shalom, michael03 |

Hi, Michael... You wrote, "...the attitude of them [Pharisees] is prevalent in our society today." Keep in mind that from an obedience standpoint, you could find no one better than a Pharisee. Also, from a teaching standpoint, they were outstanding. Jesus even told people to carefully do what they taught (Matthew 23:2-3a). The reason all of the Pharisaical flaws, as you call them, still exist is because they are fundamental to the human heart (Mark 7:21-23). Hypocrisy is rooted in our hearts. We always tend to identify with the good guys in Scripture. That's a form of hypocrisy, too (Matthew 23:29-33). I suspect that we would do better to try to discern just how closely we resemble the bad guys! In Him, Doc |

5 | Can people still be a pharisee? | 1 Cor 1:30 | michael03 | 192946
Hello, Doc. Gooooood point.( on all of it). A few days ago, I heard a preacher on 101.1 fm teaching on jealousy. He used Saul(old testament) to show what jealousy can drive a person to. I do agree with the closeness of myself to the bad guys.( Of course, no matter what, I still fall waaaaaaayy short of my Lord.)This goes along with my reading in Rom.14:1-12. Bless you.
