2 | Does given (didomi) mean permanent? | 1 Cor 12:7 | Morant61 | 148300
Greetings Searcher! No! Father knows best! ;-) In both verses, 'didomi' is a Present, Passive, Indicative, 3rd Person, Plural verb. 'Didomi' basically means 'to give', or 'to entrust', or 'to distribute'. Nothing in the text indicates anything about permanence! One way to do so would have been to use the perfect tense. This would have an indicated an ongoing effect (in general). There is a different verb used in v. 11. It is 'diaireo'. It is a Present, Active, Participle. That clause could be translated, '....distributing to each as He wills'. One could make the case from this the distribution is a continuing process. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

3 | Does given (didomi) mean permanent? | 1 Cor 12:7 | Searcher56 | 148305
Tim, greetings my brother, Yes I know our Father knows best! ... but for those at SBF, methinks you do. This changes my thought on spiritual gifts. I have been asked what my spiritual gifts were. I thought once I figured them out, they were mine. While I could have more, that I don't know about, the gifts I now have were mine until I departed this earth. Now, based on the Greek, is it possible He may not distibute a certain gift to me in the future(that I exercise now)? Or is the distribution (of a particular gift) a continuing process to an individual? I haven't heard anyone meantion the Greek (tense) in the past, and am gald to sit under your teaching. Searcher |

4 | Does given (didomi) mean permanent? | 1 Cor 12:7 | Morant61 | 148307
Greetings Searcher! Well, my thoughts on this issue are definitely a work in progress. I first started thinking about it while administering spiritual gifts inventories. I began to notice that the inventories didn't really measure spiritual gifts as much as talents and interests (in my opinion)! To give my opinion concerning your 'process' question, I would say that the process is ongoing in both the individual and the church. Whichever view one adopts (giving or given), we certainly need God's gifts! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
