Hi Doc: In the answer I gave to Librarian, I listed Luke:10. When Jesus sent out the 70. I intentionally left out the referance to Mtt.10, because of the admonition to the disciples to not go to the Gentiles, but only to the lost sheep of Israel. How are we to minister to the world, unless we have been endued with the same power they were. If we believe we have received the Holy Spirit, at Baptism, then we HAVE BEEN endued with power as they were. We as believers, have been told by Jesus, to do as we have seen him do, and far greater. How can that be accomplished, unless we have that POWER residing in Eartehin Vessles. Paul lists for us the gifts of the Spirit. 1Cor.12 All of those gifts listed, are for the Body of Christ, are we at that point to believe that Jesus, and God himself, didnt intend for us to take that power to the lost of the world. 1Cor.2:4-5 Paul didnt preach to them in the wisdom of Men, but in the power, and demonstration of the Spirit, so that there faith wouldnt be in the wisdom of men but in the POWER of GOD. 1Cor.4:20 For the Kingdom of God is not in word, but in POWER. |

Hi, Lookin... The gift of evangelism (2 Timothy 4:5) is not a service to the world at all. Indeed, it only increases their condemnation when they hear unbelievingly (1 John 5:10). After all, the Gospel is not the news of a hypothetical salvation (Romans 10:13-14). It is proclaimed freely (Matthew 24:14), in obedience (Matthew 28:19), with confidence, for His elect will hear and respond (John 10:16). What joy to serve our Lord, as He effectually calls (1 Peter 5:10), justifying the ungodly (Romans 4:5), raising to life the dead (Ephesians 2:1-3; Titus 3:5), and fitting us into the body of Christ (1 Peter 2:5; Ephesians 2:20-22). Hi, Lookin... I thought I did all that in post #203941. :-) In the old days men spoke of the providence of God. The teaching of sound doctrine is something that has atrophied to the point where terminology is characterized more by popular televangelists than it is by Scripture. Studying the passages that specifically deal with gifts (Romans 12; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4; 1 Peter 4) is key. Yet a whole mysticism has risen up on the subject. Since nobody bothers to study church history, they fail to notice that this stuff keeps popping up every century or so, so we end up destined to relive it all over and over. Ah, well, that could be a whole series of posts in and of itself. Let's see, you wanted to know about the gift of evangelism: But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's GIFT [my emphasis]. Therefore it says, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (In saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the EVANGELISTS [my emphasis], the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the BODY [my emphasis] of Christ [not the world], until we [in the church] all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. (Ephesians 4:7-14 ESV) Now, I'm assuming that no one will quibble over the fact that the phrase "gift of evangelism" is not explicitly present in Bible. In addition to Ephesians 4:11 there are particular men who were designated as evangelists (Acts 21:8). Indeed, that function was understood sufficiently for Paul to direct Timothy to do an evangelist's work (2 Timothy 4:5). The clear implication is that this particular function ordained by God -- although something that all believers are enjoined and have the blessing to participate in (1 Peter 3:15-16) -- was also something for which He granted special empowerment (1 Peter 1:12; etc.). Further, He did so, for His church (Ephesians 4:12-14), not for the world. In Him, Doc |

Hi Doc: You're right, I missed it, I looked for it in the Gateway Bible, and it didnt come up. Sorry for the inconvenience. One last thing, did you ever answer the question put forth by Librarian? We apparently have a differance of opinion, dont you think Librarian should hear both sides of the issue. All you would have to do is post your belief, rather than having a debate with me on theological beliefs. Then let the person who asked the question, decide which answer they wanted to accept. |

Hi, Lookin... As all our discussion is visible to forum members and visitors alike, no doubt new librarian has followed our various points. We haven't engaged in a debate of theology. We are contending a point of exegesis, remaining in compliance with the doctrine of sola Scriptura (as required by our gracious forum host). When we are simply stating our personal beliefs, we will signal such a thing with key phrases, like, "I believe" or "In accordance with the tenets of my church" etc. The Scripture's authority is such that we can and ought be dogmatic about those things clearly stated by the Scripture. Furthermore, our love of the Word, over and above our love for personal validation, is such that we earnestly desire correction and reproof (Proverbs 9:8; 2 Timothy 3:16-17). Our world embraces an unreasoned syncretism and pluralism. However, our God is infinitely rational (Titus 1:2). He doesn't offer up truths to fit our taste like dishes in a smörgåsbord. His Word is truth (John 17:17). It is the kind of truth that sets us free (John 8:32). He wishes us to love the truth as He loves the truth (Zechariah 8:19). He enables what He commands by granting His elect a love of the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10). Consequently, we hold one another accountable (Hebrews 3:13), not simply because we are believers, but because our interaction is narrowly focused. It is focused on the Word itself (Study Bible), done publicly (Forum), and in accordance with the explicit guidelines of Lockman, with which we committed ourselves when we joined (Colossians 3:9). If the Lord will judge every idle word (Matthew 12:36), ought we to be casual about our public, SBF posts? In Him, Doc |

Hi again Doc: Sorry about whatever misunderstandings I may have had about this Forum. I have taken the time to go back to your first note to me, (Because it is all about seeking the truth.) Maby this will make my position a little more clear, please understand that these beliefs are soly my own, this is MY opinion on what the scripture says, and the way I interpret them. How are we to minister to those in the world, if we cannot use any of the gifts of the spirit? As Jesus is our example, he used those gifts? Or are we to assume, Jesus was the Christ, and therefore Diety, and being part of the Godhead, was not an example to us at all, on the grounds that he was God Incarnate, thus it was His Holy Spirit. So he could not be an example to us, on how to perform in the gifts of the spirit. Although it could be argued, that Jesus was in all aspects, a man (human) with all the weaknesses, and frailties as we are. On those grounds, plus the fact, he had the Holy Spirit Come down upon him like a dove, during Baptism, can we assume he was also baptised in the Holy Spirit? The same way we receive. John 1:29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:30 "This is He on behalf of whom I said, 'After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.' John 1:31 "I did not recognize Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in water." John 1:32 John testified saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. John 1:33 "I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, 'He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.' John 1:34 "I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God." As another example there is Paul, he ministered to the people, using the Gifts of the Spirit He was fully Man, a Jew of Jews, of the tribe of Benjimen, a persicuter of the faith, but we see that God, used him in a mighty way. God not being a respector of persons, filled him with HIS Holy Spirit. Acts 19:11 God was performing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, Acts 19:12 so that handkerchiefs or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out. |

Hi, Lookin... Too much ground here to cover, involving everything from theology proper, to christology, pneumatology, soteriology, ecclesiology, etc. etc. The confirmation of Jesus as Christ was, indeed, accompanied with great miracles. Furthermore, in the establishment of the church, the Holy Spirit moved in unique and powerful ways through the apostles. Those special acts don't represent normative behaviors for you and me. We don't walk on water to cross a lake, pay taxes by looking for coins in a fishes' mouth, curse unfruitful trees, or cure blindness by putting mud on eyelids. Furthermore, note that the verses you cited are all narrative. Trying to uncover doctrine from narrative leads to all kinds of error. We learn doctrine from didactic passages. Didactic passages are those that teach. They instruct us in orthodoxy (what to believe) and orthopraxy (what to do). The didactic passages that speak to spiritual gifts are Romans 12; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4; 1 Peter 4. By way of reminder, and to get us back on track: Where in Scripture are we taught that any spiritual gift is "for ministering to those in the world?" In Him, Doc |

Hi Doc: I give up, Your right we are to only minister to the world in our own power. Talk them into salvation, by cunning craftyness. Then not worry if they ever get baptised or not , because the gifts of the Spirit, arent in functin today, they were as we all know dispensational, and the dispensation has been over for some 1900 yrs. Sorry for apperantly waisting everyones time. This is my last post on this subject. GOD BLESS |

Um, Ah, I think you may have missed the point. "And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God." 1 Cor 2:1-5 |
