prayon: Acts 8:14-17 does not contradict 1 Corinthians 12:13! The Holy Spirit is the supernatural and sovereign agent in regeneration, baptizing ALL believers into the body of Christ, as 1 Corinthians 12:13 clearly teaches. ..... Regarding Acts 8:14-17: This passage does not support the false notion that Christians receive the Holy Spirit subsequent to salvation. This was a transitional period in which confirmation by the apostles was necessary to verify the inclusion of a new group of people into the church. Animosity existed between the Jews and Samaritans, and because of this it was essential for the Samaritans to receive the Spirit in the presence of the leaders of the Jerusalem church in order to maintain a unified church. The delay revealed also the need of the Samaritans to come under apostolic authority. The same transitional event occurred when the Gentiles were added to the church (Acts 11:44-46. See also Acts 15:6-12 and 19:6). ..... In Matthew 3:11, the baptism "with the Holy Spirit" refers to the spiritual rebirth of the regenerate who shall receive the baptism of the Spirit. This was normative for all believers in New Testament times and is no less true for all believers in our time. Greetings Hank, I do not see how what I said can be a false notion. Receiving the HOly Spirit is seperate from being born again. Acts 8:15-16 tells us that the Samaritans were baptized in the name of Jesus but that Peter and John had to go to them and lay hands on them for them to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Again in Acts 10:45-48 it tells us the two are seperate. The Gentiles heard the word and were baptized in the HOly Ghost and began to speak in tongues. Peter then concluded "Can anyone forbid water that these, who have received the Holy Ghost as well as we, should not be baptized? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord." I have never read anywhere in the bible that there had or has to be a transitional period between being born again and being included in a church. You said that confirmation was necessary to verify the inclusion of a new group of people into the church. What would of happened if the apostales decided that they didn't want to let them into the church? Is there somewhere in scripture that says that the apostles had the authority to do that? Does that mean that when Jesus brings someone to salvation that if the apostles didn't believe that they should be included in the church that they overrule Jesus and say no? Does that meant that today when someone is born again that there has to be a transitional period so the pastors of a church can verify that the new converts will fall under the authority of the pastors? Where does it say in scripture that leader must be present for someone to receive the Spirit? I am not quite sure how you got the impression that I think Acts 8 contradicts 1Cor 12.... By the way Hank I has a slight bit of trouble looking up your Acts ll reference as Acts 11 only has 30 verses.... ;o) prayon |

prayon: Your copy of Acts doesn't have a 11:44-46? You must be using a Reader's Digest Bible :-) I'm kidding, of course; mine doesn't either. But it does have a 10:44-46, which is the reference that should have been cited. Sorry. --Hank | ||||||

Speaking in tongue in the first place is a gift of the Holy Spirit according to Apostle Paul in 1cointhians 12:1-11, 14:1,2. When we take a critical look at what happened in Acts 2:1-4 the main perpuse of this tongue was to minister the word of the Lord Jesus Christ to the people who were in Jerusalem. They were of different tribes and languages.so the spirit enabled each of them to speak in diff.language."a crowd came together in bewilderment, becuase each one heard them speaking in his own language"Acts 2:6. In the other hand,Ap.Paul agian said in 1cor.14:2 that the one speaking in tongues speaks to God and him self but not unto men. This means its help us in praying. |
