God wants a good witness ............................... The context of this verse is that Paul is writing to some people at a church who are abusing the Lord’s Supper. Some of the people are not eating and drinking meals at home, and then comming to church to gorge themselves on the bread and get drunk on the wine. Others therefore, are not able to eat or drink anything becuase there is none left. As a result people are getting sick. ................................................. Paul then says in this verse that this “sickness” is a God’s way of disciplining those people. Paul also says that God’s purpose in punishing the people is so that they won’t be condemned by the world. The reason is that the world would definately condemn the church people for being drunk (see Acts 2:13) and selfish. So God is trying to discorage this behavior which would harm their witness as Christians. |

Good Afternoon SirPent You said 'Paul then says in this verse that this “sickness” is a God’s way of disciplining those people.' I do not understand what you mean. vv 29-30 explain why many are weak and sickly and why many sleep. Are you saying God punishes those that eat and drink unworthy with sickness? Abba Father Bless you... Meredith |

Clarification ............................................. Good afternoon to you Meredith, I am not saying that God will always make people who treat the Lord’s Supper (Communion, Eucharist, etc.) irreverantly, sick. However, it appears that Paul does attribute the specific sickness that the people were experiencing, in the passage you asked about, to the judgement of God. ............................................. As for what we could learn from this passage, I think it shows that we should take seriously both the sacrifice that Jesus made for us and also our witness to the world around us. |
