Bible Question: what does this mean to us? |
Bible Answer: God wants a good witness ............................... The context of this verse is that Paul is writing to some people at a church who are abusing the Lord’s Supper. Some of the people are not eating and drinking meals at home, and then comming to church to gorge themselves on the bread and get drunk on the wine. Others therefore, are not able to eat or drink anything becuase there is none left. As a result people are getting sick. ................................................. Paul then says in this verse that this “sickness” is a God’s way of disciplining those people. Paul also says that God’s purpose in punishing the people is so that they won’t be condemned by the world. The reason is that the world would definately condemn the church people for being drunk (see Acts 2:13) and selfish. So God is trying to discorage this behavior which would harm their witness as Christians. |
