Hello, Leonore: What Steve (stjones) said to you about the Forum is true; he gave you good advice, and he's one of the Forum users you can bank on to post good, solid, biblically-based stuff. Most of the old heads on this Forum who have been posting for a long time do good work and are reliable. So are a few of the newer ones too, for that matter. But this Forum also gets its share of fly-by-nighters who may, and often do, post wild stuff that is pure theological garbage. As Steve warned, keep a Bible handy. Compare what is being said with what the Bible says. Look up in the user profile the credentials of each user with whom you correspond or whose posts interest you. In many cases, especially with the transient fly-by-nighters, the user profile may be blank. But notice how long the user has been on the Forum and note also how many posts he has made. These are all clues that may well indicate to you whether you should pay any attention to him or dismiss him as an air head who doesn't know what he's talking about or is pushing an agenda. Yes, all of us on this Forum are, or certainly should be, Bereans who match what is being said here with what God says. And I extend you a hearty welcome. Please let us know how we can be of help to you in your new walk as a follower of the Lord Jesus. --Hank
2 | possible for God to turn his back on Jes | Rom 5:4 | leonore | 114468
As a new christian sometimes I feel I have so many questions and I don't want to bother my pastor too much. I thank God that I've found somewhere that when I have a question I have somewhere to come. I have a question from my pastor's message today. He was telling us about Jesus' suffering on the cross. He was telling us how it was so much more than physical suffering and how he took on all our sins. The part I didn't understand was when he said God had to turn his back on Jesus. It kind of confused me because since Jesus is God I don't understand how that's possible. Do you have any scriptures that can help me to understand?

Leonore, Your Pastor may be interpreting Jesus's cry to His Father in Mark 15.34 as evidence of God's turning away from His Son. "At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?" (Mar 15:34) Jesus is quoting Psalm 22.1, which is a Messianic Psalm prophesying the sacrifice and redemptive triumph of a levitical messiah - Jesus Christ Himself. Jesus quotes the psalm to frame His sacrifice as an act of His Father's Divine Mercy, not as a moment of abandonment. "No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father." (Joh 10:18) Jesus gave His life willingly. Colin |
