1 | Who is a Jew? | Rom 2:28 | kalos | 138160
Who is a Jew? For he is not a real Jew who is one outwardly, nor is true circumcision something external and physical. He is a Jew who is one inwardly, and real circumcision is a matter of the heart, spiritual and not literal. His praise is not from men but from God. Romans 2:28-29 (Revised Standard Version) Romans 4:16 (ESV) That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, For it is not everybody who is a descendant of Jacob (Israel) who belongs to [the true] Israel. Romans 9:6b AMPLIFIED "The N.T. indicates no distinction between the terms Jew, Israelite, and Hebrew. All are used by Paul concerning himself (Acts 21:39; Rom. 11:1; Phil. 3:5)" (New Scofield Reference Bible, Oxford, 1967). Romans 9:6-8 (ESV) But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, [7] and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but "Through Isaac shall your offspring be named." [8] This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring. Romans 9:24-26 (ESV) even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? [25] As indeed he says in Hosea, "Those who were not my people I will call 'my people,' and her who was not beloved I will call 'beloved.' " [26] "And in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' there they will be called 'sons of the living God.'" Romans 10:12 (ESV) For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 1 Cor. 12:13 (ESV) For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. Galatians 3:26-29 (ESV) for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. [27] For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. [28] There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. [29] And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. Col. 3:11 (ESV) Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. |

2 | Who is a Jew? | Rom 2:28 | MJH | 139100
Kalos, A Jew is from the tribe of Judah. Usually one thinks of Israel and Jew as one and the same. Technically that is not accurate. But since most who remain are from the tribe of Judah, the name Jew came to mean all Israel. It is interesting to note that Paul (Saul) was a Benjamite, and not a Jew (from Judah). I'm certain there is much more detail information about how and when this term Jew came about and when it replaced Judah and when it came to mean all Israel. |

4 | Who is a Jew? | Rom 2:28 | MJH | 139145
Like I said, the term Jew was used to refer to all those of Israel by this time. But the term originated from the tribe of Judah which for centuries was the only tribe in the Land; however, some individuals from other tribes were there in very small number. Thus Paul, a Benjamite, would refer to himself as a Jew by this time in history—especially speaking to Greeks or Romans. If I get some time I will research it some more and provide more definite information, none of which is really important to know, but of late I have been very interested in the Hebrew and world history during the second temple times.
