Shalom Steve, Be it known that I am of the opinion that we are not "bound" to tithe 10percent, but I do choose to do so. And if I give my 10pc then get some of it back at the end of the year, then I didn't tithe 10pc. And at the new year the cycle begins again. This is just really confusing for me. (In this area, I'm definitely a new born!!) This isn't an answer I need for 2007, but next year is what I've got on my mind. :-) I'll be interested to see what pops up in this discussion, Steve, also. I'm off to classes right now, catch you later. Thanks to all who can contribute some help! Cheri |

Cheri, Hopefully, the giving has nothing to do with what one might get back at the end of the year. We (in the US) are required by law to pay taxes. Scripture directs us to pay them (Romans 13:7). The way our tax is structured, you are allowed by law to take certain deductions. If you claim the deductions, and qualify, you get a portion of that back. So, you are abiding by the law of the land which we are told to do. It would seem to me the only way you could avoid the issue your concerned with, bound or unbound, is if you did not claim the deduction in the first place. The lawful deductions are benefits built into our tax system. Giving is a benefit as it is a blessing from God. Both are meant for your good. Enjoy them! :-) My opinion based on my limited knowledge! Shalom y'all, Thanks Steve and John for your input. Some things to chew on. Yes, John, I intend to tithe 10pc of the refund, and also use it for the gift I'm planning on giving. And I have only just this year (2008) begun to tithe earnings. I don't think, though, that I'll claim them in 2008. Just because the law says we can doesn't mean it's "right," only that it's legal in our land (though, PLEASE don't get me wrong, I'm NOT saying it's wrong!!). That's why I asked the question to begin with. You two helped answer that question, now it's just down to personal choices. Also, I have a whole year to study this out fruther, and get it figured out (and besides, I'm female - and females, even believers, may retain the perogative of changing our minds!). :-) Cheri |

Hi Cheri, I'd like to just add, it's not that you'd be giving less, its that you'd be paying less taxes, a totally separate issue in my mind. Jesus said give to caeser what is caeser's, so if you are fulfilling the legal requirements of what to pay, why pay more? Paul said of a slave, don't be concerned about your slavery, but if you can become free, then do that. (1 Cor 7:21 Were you called while a slave? Do not worry about it; but if you are able also to become free, rather do that.) So then Paul acknowledges the desirablity of an unfettered legal status. For me, this is a guiding principle in these sorts of decisions. I can give to caeser what belongs to him, according to his rules, and keep the rest to be used, hopefully, to the glory of God. So this is just my opinion - the beauty is, we are all to give according to what we've decided in our hearts, and you understand that, so you'll do just fine, whatever you choose to do. Love in Christ, Mark |
