1 | Worship/Service? original context Greek | Rom 12:1 | Searcher56 | 122513 | ||
Worship or Service? original, context, Greek word Romans 12:1 is translated, "your spiritual service of worship". But, I say it is not translated correctly ... based on the original, context and the Greek word 1. The Original Having both service and worship not make sense, since it only appears once in the original ... logikh;n (spiritual) latreivan (service) uJmw'n: (your). 2. The Context The King James Version translates the last phrase, "which is your reasonable service." Which fits better? The rest of the chapter, even up to Romans 15:22 is about our service. 3. The Greek word Proskuneo is the main word for worship in Greek. The Greek verb for service is latreuo. Latreia is the Greek noun form, which Romans 12:1 is. Three times proskuneo and latreuo are linked together (Mat 4:10, Luk 4:8, Rom 1:25). Never is latreuo translated worship. The same is true for the Aramaic (Dan 3:12,14, 18, 28) and Hebrew counterparts (Exo 20:5, 23:24, Deu 4:19, 5:9, 8:19, 11:16, 17:3, 29:26, 30:17; 1 Kin 9:6, 9, 16:31, 22:53; 2 Kin 17:16, 21:3, 21:21; 2 Chr 7:19, 22, 33:3; Psa 97:7; Jer 25:6). Do not think service as being worship, tho they are related. Romans 12:1 is about service only. |

So what is the practical difference between these two interpretations? What does your preferred word of "service" mean to our christianity? Could this be related to "works of faith" as described in James? If not, why not? Please expound. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

Country Girl, Based on the Scripture I cited before, I see wosrhip is being prostrate before the Lord, knowing that He has absolute rule over us. We do not think about another person or anything else. Service is the action we take to minister to others. We do it as unto Him, because we are His servants ... we are serving Him and others benefit. Our actions prove we are His servants, as works prove our faith. Searcher |

So, wouldn't you say that James has some good words to add to this concept of service or ministering to others in the body, performing acts of kindness in the name of our Lord. Of course we should be willing to do these acts not for the attention of men but for the sake of our God because we owe Him our very lives. James teaches us IF we have this kind of true faith, we'll be compelled to act like this. Thus we really can't expect to be pleasing to our God unless we are do our best to perform these little acts of kindness in response to our faith. This is NOT to say that we can hope to EARN our way to heaven as we're tempted to do. We must fight against that kind of thinking and keep ourselves completely humble and submissive, just a slave bought and paid for with Jesus' dear blood. What do you think? Blessings to you.
