1 | Romans 12:17 | Rom 12:1 | jessica21 | 119777
Romans 12:17 says to "Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody." I'm looking for a deep answer to this. I'm not sure if I should take the face value answer of just be careful of your actions, but how does that relate to Everybody. Why would it not be to God?

jessica, Welcome to the Forum! First, I don't think there is necessarily a "deep meaning" to this verse. We most definitely want to be careful about our actions, i.e. "how do others perceive what I'm doing?" What I would recommend (if you haven't done so) is to read the entire chapter of Romans 12 to get the context. Next, if you'll note, the paragraph begins in vs. 14 and carries through to the end of the chapter. Next, you might want to look at several different translations to get a sense for the verse: The NASB says:"Respect what is right in the sight of all men." The ASV says:"Take thought for things honorable in the sight of all men." The Amplified New Testament says: "but take thought for what is honest and proper and noble [aiming to be above reproach] in the sight of everyone. [Prov. 20:22]." I believe it would be "to God" as verse 19 summarizes. Also, 2 Cor. 8:21 is a good cross-reference to this. I hope this helps, BradK |
