1 | Can someone help me get to God? | Rom 10:9 | Hank | 122591
Prazn: I never said that the teachings of ALL TV preachers are in conflict with sound doctrine. Please don't twist my words. I was referring to the list that kalos submitted. And it makes no earthly difference whether I'm entitled to my opinion. What matters is that the Word of Faith Movement is false doctrine that is not and cannot be supported by Scripture. Those who espouse it and teach it to others are false teachers. Instead of telling me that I am entitled to my opinion, why don't you show me by Scripture wherein my opinion about these TV preachers is wrong. ..... In regard to the comparison between the wealth of the Roman Catholic Church and the wealth of the TV preachers in question: Corporate wealth is the proper thing to be considered with the former, whereas it is personal wealth with the latter. You still have failed to explain what your point is in dragging the wealth of the Roman Catholic Church into the discussion and comparing the Church's corporate assets to the personal assets of TV preachers. --Hank
2 | Can someone help me get to God? | Rom 10:9 | prazn | 122596
Hank, I don't know anything about the Word of Faith movement; so, I couldn't begin to defend them even if I wanted to. I only listen to one of the ministers mentioned in the post that began this debate and I don't always agree with what that minister preaches. However, I am aware that there are many people in the body of Christ who do receive spiritual sustenance from these ministers. I praise the Lord for their ministries, because these believers are at least seeking to know more about the Word of God. Please hear me! I don't think that anyone should "hang their spiritual hat" on any individual minister's teachings. So, I'm encouraged that the Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit "will guide us into all truth". And, that "He who began a good work in us will be faithful to complete it". So, regardless of where each of the members of the body are "at" (spiritually), we are ever growing, ever changing ("from glory to glory"), and are (prayerfully) being transformed into the image of our Lord and Savior. I agree with you! Earthly wealth is not relevant!!! peace, prazn |

3 | Can someone help me get to God? | Rom 10:9 | EdB | 122603
Prazn You said, "I don't think that anyone should "hang their spiritual hat" on any individual minister's teachings." And you also said, "So, I'm encouraged that the Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit "will guide us into all truth"." Let me ask two questions based on this: The first, if you can't/won't hang your spiritual hat on what a preacher says why listen to him at all? Second how would you know if the Holy Spirit revealed the truth to you or not? How do you know it isn't something that satisfies your human logic, feeds your existing prejudices and beliefs, isn't a lie or a deception from the adversary. I hear so many say "I'm lead of the Holy Spirit" yet they hold beliefs that are in contradiction to the scripture, or are based on single verses that most of the time are ripped from context. Unless we are willing to become Bible scholars and/or theologians I think it time we begin to seek out men and women who teach truth we can hang our spiritual hats on and be discipled by them. The problem in the church today is everyone is being "lead" by the Holy spirit and doing, saying, and believing what ever they want. EdB |

Hi Edb, Being willing to become a Bible scholar and/or a theologian, I might have a special viewpoint, but I believe an honest heart does recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit! If we search the Bible just to find some passages that prove our ideologies, we will probably end up with getting lies and deception out of it - but then it is our deliberate choice... But if we prayerfully and without prejudice (for this reason, personally I don't even read the commentaries before I study a passage myself) read the Bible, the Holy Spirit will lead us to His Truth and teach us all things (Jn 14:26)! Don't we pray, 'deliver us from evil' (Mt 6:13)? We know that God listens to all our prayers (Jn 14:13-14) - so if our sincere intention is to find the Truth, not to bigotedly hold on to our beliefs, we can fully trust in God's power to protect us from lies and deception from the adversary! Luke 11:13: "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?" The truth that the Holy Spirit reveals to us is never in contradiction with the Scriptures, and ripping single verses from their context or holding on to beliefs which are clearly proven wrong is clearly not 'being led by the Holy Spirit'... "Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you -- unless indeed you fail the test? But I trust that you will realize that we ourselves do not fail the test. Now we pray to God that you do no wrong; not that we ourselves may appear approved, but that you may do what is right, even though we may appear unapproved. For we can do nothing against the truth, but only for the truth." 2Cor 13:5-8. We listen to preachers for the purpose of testing our faith. We are to pray and open our minds: if we know the Truth, nobody can convince us of anything else, for God Himself will protect us, if we ask Him to do so. But if we do not know the Truth, we must be prepared to change our mind... This is what teachers and preachers are for: we judge their teachings, and pray that God will show us what we are to accept and what we should reject. Whether we are lay people or theologians, we are not to suffer fools gladly... (2Cor 11:19) Blessings, Zsuzsi |

5 | Can someone help me get to God? | Rom 10:9 | kalos | 122666
Zsuzsi: 'A proper understanding of the Bible depends on two things: '(1) the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit, and '(2) the interpreting work of the reader. '[The word illumination has to do with] "the ministry of the Holy Spirit which makes clear the truth of the written revelation in the Bible. In reference to the Bible, revelation relates to its content or material, inspiration to the method of recording that material, and illumination to the meaning of the record. (...) 'Illumination, though assured, does not always guarantee automatic understanding. As indicated above, the believer must be in fellowship with the Lord in order to experience this ministry. But also he must study, using the teachers God has given to the church (Rom. 12:7) and the abilities and means at his own disposal.' ____________________ Page 1959, The Ryrie Study Bible, Charles Caldwell Ryrie, Moody Press, Chicago, 1976, 1978 Grace to you, kalos :-) |
