1 | Is speaking in tongues a necessity ? | Acts 2:4 | jilliebbean | 122013
I know several christians who claim to be able to speak in tongues and be slain in the spirit. Is this truly a gift of the spirit we still have today, or was that just part of the pentecost described in Acts 2? I am a born again christian and belong to a baptist church where the spirit is felt however, everyone remains upright and worships in english. Ive attended a revival before and accepted Christ there but I never could get so moved to speak in tongues or fall over. The spirit always brings tears of joy and I know God loves and accepts me as his own. The question I guess is then is what do I tell those who think if you dont have this ability you are not saved?

Jilliebean: The answer you received from jcsav is the view of most who are involved with the Word of Faith movement. This movement is filled with false teachings and intertwined with othodox Christian doctrin. The Word of Faith movement has such profound false theachers as Benny Hinn Kenneth Copland and Kenneth Haggen, just to name a few of these detestable saints of satan. No where is sain in the spirit a Biblical response recorded. Toungues are a "gift" not something to be asked for! Rarely will you see the "tongues" used as Scripture says it is to be used. I wish as many people desired the gift of helps or giving. But most want to experience something rather than do something that is not seen by others. My kind advice is to seek the greatest "gift" which is love. justme |

Jilliebean, justme is exactly right. Many in certain movements do make the claims you have spoke of. But let us look to God's Word for the answere. First let us consider tongues look up 1 Cor. 12 and13. You will find listed many gifts and Paul makes it clear that not everyone has the same gifts rather each one of us has different gifts so minstery can be carried on. If we all had the same gifts then there would be alot of things not getting done. The one gift we should all share is the gift of love. This is the one that will last. Many people go to church looking for an experience some big emotional event however God's voice is usually heard as a still small voice. As far as slain in the spirit there is no place in the Bible that this is supported. If you look up the references that the people who promote this use you will find that it is always the enemies of Jesus falling away from Him not belivers. An example of this is the mob in the Garden that falls back When Jesus answeres I AM. The phenomenon of slain in the spirit can be traced back to Maria Beulah Woodworth-Etter who died in 1924. She figured out that by working people into an altered state of mind and playing off their emotions and working off the effect of the fact people came looking for just such an experience this can be pulled off. 4 | Is speaking in tongues a necessity ? | Acts 2:4 | Hank | 122092
tgc: I've always thought that a great deal of the misunderstanding surrounding the speaking-in-tongues mystique could be resolved simply by substituting the word "languages" for "tongues." And a great deal of the aura could be removed from the slain-in-the-spirit mystique by reading Hank Hanegraaff's "Counterfeit Revival". The naked truth about us human beings is that we by nature simply don't want to know the truth that will make us free. Our illusions are so comfortable! --Hank

Hank, Yes many of us are comfortable with our illusions however many people are mislead by all of the garbage that has slipped into our churches. With the Word Faith crowd having gained such a huge following and their ability through the TBN network to raise millions of dollars to spread their lies we must be ever viligant to be ready to give a reason for the hope that lies within us with gentleness and respect. To that end try to keep an open line of communication with people who have been hooked by the lies of false teaching and be ready to share the Truth of Christ with them at every opportunity. Another point of interest along this line is that many people re taken in by this type teaching because they do not really understand the doctrin of grace. They are still trying to earn their way into Heaven. Finally today people have always been seaking an experience something different something big there fore they are especially looking for this in the church and in some of these movements they are easily able to find it. Even if it is not real. Scripture tells us that in the last days people will not put up with sound teaching but they will heap up for themselves teachers to scratch their itching ears. In plain lanuage people for the most are going to go where they can hear what they want to hear. And you know and I know that the Gospel is offensive by it's very nature. Always remember that the greatest spiritual gift is love so let us go foward in love sharing the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to all who have ears to hear. In The Love of Christ, tgc |
