Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Matt 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee and escape from the wrath and indignation [of God against disobedience] that is coming? Matt 3:8 Bring forth fruit that is consistent with repentance [let your lives prove your change of heart]; There must first be demonstrated repentance then water baptism snf you SHALL then received the gift of the Holy Spirit. Notice what John the Baptist said to those coming for baptism without showing evidence of reprentence first. |

God's day to you, armond888, The sequence of "first be demonstrated repentance then water baptism snf you SHALL then received the gift of the Holy Spirit" is not correct. The following is from Tim Moran's post It begins ... First of all, the verbs are different numbers. a) 'Repent' is an (Aorist, Active, Imperative, 2nd Person, Plural) verb. b) 'Be baptized' is an (Aorist, Passive, Imperative, 3rd Person, Singular) verb. c) The pronoun in the phrase 'for forgiveness of sins' is a Second Person, Plural pronoun. Therefore, the phrase 'for the forgiveness of sins' cannot be associated with the command to 'be baptized'. It is simply not gramatically possible. The best way to view the verse is the view the command to be baptized as a parenthetical statement: "Repent (plural) (and let each one be baptized (singular) in the Name of Jesus Christ) for the forgiveness of your (plural) sins and you (plural) will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" For more enter 147165 under Quick Search. I see nothing in your explaination that changes my understanding. I find that the Amplified Bible provides a proper translation. Matt 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee and escape from the wrath and indignation [of God against disobedience] that is coming? Matt 3:8 Bring forth fruit that is consistent with repentance [let your lives prove your change of heart]; |

BradK - Your statement concerning the Book of Acts is a narrative not intended for doctrine??? Perhaps you should consider the following: 2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; Seem to me that you are picking and choosing what is relevent or not in the Bible. |

Armond: I don't wish to argue with you, my friend. Perhaps you should read more carefully what I did say? Please do not take my words out of context and then mis-quote them. That's not being honest. Here's what I said "The book of Acts being a narrative is not intending to delineate the doctrine(s) of salvation, i.e. how we are saved. It does contain doctrine but we must be careful not to isolate the teachings here from the rest of scripture" Please re-read it carefully. Listen, if you've already got your mind made up and don't want to be confused with any fact, that's your choice. But, let's please be honest, and stay with scripture to make our points. Fair enough? Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
