1 | Are we presenting the gospel scripturaly | Acts 2:38 | koscheiman | 173185
Actually the Greek in Eph 2:8-9 says "the faith" not just faith. Like in Jude 3 where it reads "Contend earnestly for the faith" refferring to the system of belief known as the gospel. Secondly, the context of 1Peter 3:21 is plainly salvation through water. As Noah was saved by the flood so we are saved by baptism. I really do not know how the Scripture could word it more plainly. Also James quite plainly says we are not saved by faiyh alone James 2:24. |

Dear kosheiman, Unless you fail to understand the Book of Romans- the theology of the NT- the conclusion you reach would be valid. Nowhere does Paul teach that salvation is by any means other than faith (Rom. 4:3, Gal.2:16, Eph. 2:8-9, Tit. 3:7). My reading and understanding of Eph. 2:8 shows it is through (dia) faith! I'm missing the definite article. Why does Paul commend those in Heb. 11 for their faith instead of being water baptized? As you'll note Noah was in the the Ark- dry! Those who were "really" baptized and got wet, drowned! The context of 1 Peter 3 is dealing with the example of Christs' suffering. Salvation has always been by grace through faith. Hard Sayings of the Bible makes this point: "As Noah was saved through water, so is the Christian: “Baptism now saves you.” How does baptism save a person? The answer is “by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” In other words, baptism is a union with Christ, and, united with Christ, we are carried with him to resurrection life. Paul has similarly used baptism as the point of union with Christ (Rom 6:4–11; Col 2:12). The key is that, as in 1 Peter 1:3, it is being joined to Jesus that saves. Without Jesus and his resurrection, baptism would be useless." The late C.H. Spurgeon succinctly states: "We ourselves are not dubious on this point, we protest that persons are not saved by being baptized. In such an audience as this, I am almost ashamed to go into the matter, because you surely know better than to be misled. Nevertheless, for the good of others we will drive at it. We hold that persons are not saved by baptism, for we think, first of all that it seems out of character with the spiritual religion which Christ came to teach, that he should make salvation depend upon mere ceremony. Judaism might possibly absorb the ceremony by way of type into her ordinances essential to eternal life; for it was religion of types and shadows. The false religions of the heathen might inculcate salvation by a physical process, but Jesus Christ claims for his faith that it is purely spiritual, and how could he connect regeneration with a peculiar application of aqueous fluid? I cannot see how it would be a spiritual gospel, but I can see how it would be mechanical, if I were sent forth to teach that the mere dropping of so many drops upon the brow, or even the plunging a person in water could save the soul." You cannot simply pull scriptures out of a hat to develop doctrine my freind The Book of James is not the doctrinal treatise of the NT that lays out how we are saved. Again, I refer you to Romans! 3 | Are we presenting the gospel scripturaly | Acts 2:38 | lionheart | 173210
Brad, Good day brother. People always seem to get in trouble with this one.Salvation is simple,we just make it hard. Without faith everything else is meaningless. Repentence becomes nothing more that meaningless words, empty promises devoid of any credibility and baptizm nothing more tan ritual and getting wet. Bottom line, Without faith we are highly unlikely to do any of those things refered to in Acts chapter two. Thanx Brother, lionheart |

4 | Are we presenting the gospel scripturaly | Acts 2:38 | DocTrinsograce | 173211
Dear Brother Lionheart, The way I'd put it is that the Gospel is simple. There really isn't anything simple about salvation. It is entirely a work of God, start to finish, and was a more difficult, costly, and mysterious work than all of His other works put together. For clarity, we must distinguish in our language when we are talking about the Gospel message and when we are talking about God's work of salvation. Faith and repentance are always a consequence when God regenerates one of His own. God's grace in salvation is always effectual. God's eternal purpose can never be thwarted by anyone or anything.
