1 | Test the spirits | Acts 21:4 | Makarios | 7613 | ||
Ryrie's Study Bible says, concerning this verse in the commentary of Acts 20:22, "Paul was being led by the Holy Spirit to go to Jerusalem, knowing that capture awaited him there (Acts 20:23). Those who later tried to dissuade him (Acts 21:4) did so because they knew through the Spirit what was ahead for him." And yes, Spirit should be capitalized, referring to the Holy Spirit. Good answer, Ray! |

Hi Makarios, If we view Acts 19:21-Acts 20:22 as a long paragraph concerning Paul's being on the way to Jerusalem, then we will want the words of "spirit" to agree. So even though the NASB and NKJ do not have spirit capitalized for Acts 20:22, do you not agree that it should be? If the NKJ would capitalize Spirit then it would agree with the Spirit that they already have capitalized for Acts 19:21. So Paul purposed in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem and he was bound in this same Spirit on his way to Jerusalem. Yet then it would be that same Spirit that impressed upon the disciples that he should not set foot in Jerusalem. Acts 20:23, "...except that the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me." Acts 21:11, "And coming to us, he took Paul's belt and bound his own feet and hands, and said, "This is what the Holy Spirit says: 'In this way the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles." The Holy Spirit solemnly testifies and the Holy Spirit says. We learn from comparing them that the purpose of God and the will of God was done among the Gentiles. What do you think? Can we encourage the NASB interpreters to capitalize Spirit for that "paragraph" of Acts 19:21 - Acts 20:22? From the heart, Ray |

Greetings Ray! In Acts 19:21, Paul purposed 'in the spirit' [NASB, "Spirit" in NKJV] to go to Jerusalem, and then to Rome. However, 'spirit' in this verse may be referring to his own spirit, since sometimes it was not always the will of God for him to be where he himself wanted or wished to be (see Romans 1:10). God would put him where He wanted him to be, so that he could carry out his obligation to God (Romans 1:14,15). So one could very well say that Paul purposed in his own spirit to go places, when the Holy Spirit actually was leading him where he would go. Paul's 'goings' were of the Lord, and he could never understand some of the 'ways' in which he took, even though he could say that he would like to go here or there, if allowed and in accordance with the will of God. Certainly, whatever place that Paul prayed to go that was in accordance with the will of God, he would be able to go. In Acts 20:22, we see that Paul is 'bound in spirit' [NASB and NKJV]; that is, he was being led by the Holy Spirit towards Jerusalem, even though his 'spirit' did not wish to go there, since he awaited capture (v. 23). In this case, we see a case of where the Holy Spirit is leading Paul to a place where he does not want to go, even though he follows in obedience to the Lord (v. 24). In spirit, Paul does not wish to go there, but he must do so in obedience to the Holy Spirit. In this way, I believe that the NASB and NKJV translators would be entirely justified by not capitalizing 'spirit' in Acts 19:21 and 20:22, since it more accurately speaks of Paul's own spirit in 20:22, even though there is a difference in opinion (in capitalization, at least) at 19:21. If I had to make a decision, I believe that it is Paul's own spirit in 19:21 as well, since it is he himself who is doing the 'purposing', and not the Holy Spirit. :-) Blessings to you, Makarios And yes, I used that same Ryrie Study Bible for this post as I did for the post written on 06/17/2001! Perhaps in 2 1/2 years, I will contribute to this thread yet again! That is, if it is the will of the Holy Spirit. :-) |
