"It is the work of seeking salvation in a way of constant observance of all the duty to which God directs us in His Word. If we would be saved, we must seek salvation. For although men do not obtain heaven of themselves; they do not go thither accidentally, or without any intention or endeavors of their own. God, in His Word, hath directed men to seek their salvation as they would hope to obtain it. There is a race that is set before them, which they must run, and in that race come off victors, in order to their winning the prize." --Jonathan Edwards | ||||||

Hi Doc, This quote reminds me of Philippians 3:12-16: "Phil 3:12 ΒΆ Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. Phil 3:13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, Phil 3:14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Phil 3:15 Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you; Phil 3:16 however, let us keep living by that same standard to which we have attained." Jonathan Edwards was part of "The Great Awakening" (1734-1743) period of time in the American Colonies, along with George Whitefield and William Tennent, that began as a series of isolated spiritual revivals in the Connecticut Valley. But this revival quickly spread through the colonies, causing a renewed spiritual fervor even through the 1740s. Blessings to you, Makarios |

Dear Makarios, Jonathan Edwards is probably one of my favorite theologians -- although John Owen follows a close second. (Of course, John Calvin is right up there too!) I suppose that John Piper comes closest to a Jonathan Edwards of our day. There was a saying I heard in school, "A real theologian, upon hearing 'John, John, John, John, and John,' knows precisely who is being mentioned." :-) In Him, Doc PS Paul Washer is another man fairly similar to Edwards, but I did not want to include him as he is not a John. :-) |
