1 | Believe verb form, tense and mood | Acts 16:31 | zach† | 37038
In the familar story of the Phillipian jailer. The jailer asks: " Acts 16:30 "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" At which point they said to him: 31 "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." The question I have concerning these verses is this: in verse 31 what form, tense, and mood is the verb "believe" in as found here? Secondly the phrase from verse 31 "thou shalt be saved" Is that in present, as well as future tense, or does that refer to the endurance of one who has believed? Grace and peace be multiplied unto thee zach† |

2 | Believe verb form, tense and mood | Acts 16:31 | Morant61 | 37044
Greetings Zach†! The verb 'believe' is the Aorist, Active, Imperative, 2nd, Singular of 'pisteuo'. This would indicate a point of action or a decisive moment in time, not a process. The phrase 'you will be saved' is the Future, Passive, Indicative, 2nd, Singular of 'sozo'. This would indicate that subsequent to the act of believing salvation would occur. The time of this salvation is not spelled out in this verse other than being subsequent to the action of believing. It is also a passive verb, which means that this will be done to or for us, not by us. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
