1 | What did it mean to be "put out"? | John 9:34 | Rolff | 207237
The idea is disowned or treated him as if he were dead. This is a Jewish custom to this day. “and they cast him outside” is as literal as one can get moving between Greek and English. His parents would not side with or against their son because they wanted to be able to be part of the community and Judaism. When the unnamed “blind” man chose sides with Jesus the Jewish community (compare 9:8) threw him out of his religion and community life as if he were dead. The compassion of Jesus is shown in the next paragraph 9:35f where Jesus brings the subject of this narrative into His kingdom and community. |

Thank you Rolff! I had been pondering the ramifications of this excommunication. So now the man could see but he could not function in his community. You so graciously reminded me of the grace of God! Of course, the followers of Christ would have taken him in and he would have been able to buy and sell among them, probably even live with a family as he learned what it was like to be a sighted person. (I wonder if he was surprised that hair, something he had always felt, could be different colors!)
