Bible Question: Was this man thrown physically out of the building or prohibited from coming to services or cut off from Jewish society? Lor1960 |
Bible Answer: The idea is disowned or treated him as if he were dead. This is a Jewish custom to this day. “and they cast him outside” is as literal as one can get moving between Greek and English. His parents would not side with or against their son because they wanted to be able to be part of the community and Judaism. When the unnamed “blind” man chose sides with Jesus the Jewish community (compare 9:8) threw him out of his religion and community life as if he were dead. The compassion of Jesus is shown in the next paragraph 9:35f where Jesus brings the subject of this narrative into His kingdom and community. |
