As a believers we have the "living water" but indeed we do experience periods of "spiritual dryness as you have perceived. I guess the easiest answer to this problem is to go to the Source of all solutions. When you are thirsty, go to the well and drink deeply. God knows how much you need, and if you are still "dry" you have to keep drinking! Regarding the the issue of disobedience we could look at the warnings of Jer 2:13"For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters,To hew for themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns That can hold no water." Ask God to show you if there are areas of your life where you are drawing water from your own cistern! He promises to answer - and when He does, I trust that you will be obedient to respond to His loving counsel! Hope this helps - I've been in the desert many times too! Blessings, Mommapbs |

3 | How to overcome spiritual dryness | John 7:38 | Ray | 65820 | ||
Hi Mommapbs, I am revisiting John 7:38. I've had discussions in the past about whether the pronoun "his" should be capitalized or not. From what you have said about drawing water from our own cistern and suggesting going to the Source; I would think that you would be open to capitalizing the pronoun. What do you think of these comparisons? They will have my own interpretations of capitalization and parentheses and stars for comparisons. John 7:37, "Now on the last day, the gread day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in (Me), as the Scripture said, 'From His innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.'" v38, "But this He spoke of the **Spirit,..." Jeremiah 2:11, "Has a nation changed gods, When they were not gods? But (My) people have changed their glory For that which does not profit. "Be appalled, O heavens, at this, And shudder, be very desolate," declares the Lord. "For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken **Me, The fountain of living waters, To hew for themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns, That can hold no water." Jeremiah 17:12, "A glorious throne on high from the beginning Is the place of our sanctuary. O Lord, the (Hope) of Israel, All who forsake Thee will be put to shame. Those who turn away from Me on earth will be written down, Because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, even the **Lord. Jeremiah 14:7, "Although our iniquities testify against us, O Lord, act for Thy name's sake! Truly our apostasies have been many, we have sinned against (Thee). Thou Hope of Israel, Its **Savior in time of distress, Why art Thou like a stranger in the land Or like a traveler who has pitched his tent for the night? Why art Thou like a man dismayed, Like a mighty man who cannot save? Yet Thou/ art in our midst, O Lord, And we are called by Thy name; Do not forsake us!" John 4:23, "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in Spirit/ and truth; for such people the Father also seeks to be His worshipers. (God) is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship **Him in Spirit and truth." From the heart, Ray |

Hi Ray! As I re-read this verse, I am inclined (personal opinion)to NOT capitalize the word "his" but I would consider captializing "living water!" I have concluded this because Jesus is the source of living water.(John 4:10) As believers, we have the presence of the Lord within us (our inmost being); therefore, the Living Water flows in us! Jesus also said, "Apart from Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5) I have also thought about Jesus' death and the water that flowed from His side. (John 19:34) God obviously wants us to consider this fact from more than just a physical or medical perspective. As I reflect on this scene, I find it amazing to note that He had to die in order for the Living Water to be released to us. I suspect that the Living Water that flows from our inmost being, not only quenches our thirst, but often refreshes others as well. (What does mean for dry cisterns?!) You are a wonderful refreshment Ray! May the Spirit of the Lord encourage you to continue to draw near to Him! mommapbs PS: Referencing John 4:23 and John 3:5 - perhaps this "water" is the living water? (Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life . . . John 14:6) Just something to consider! |
