Greetings BunnyDale! You will get various responses to this question, but here is my understanding of John 3:5. Baptism is never mentioned a single time in this passage. Birth, however, is mentioned. John 3:4 makes it clear that Nicodemus understood Jesus to be speaking of natural birth in v. 3. In v. 6, Jesus contrast flesh and spirit. So, my understanding of v. 5 is that Jesus was contrasting and comparing physical birth (water) with Spiritual birth. I do not see any reference to baptism is this passage at all. I hope this helps!
