Hi, Ocelot... Just for the purpose of informing, there are three common theological positions regarding this question: 1. God sent Jesus to redeem everybody Christ's death was efficacious for all men; i.e., all men are saved. This is called universalism. 2. God sent Jesus to redeem everyone who would believe (have faith) and take advantage of Christ’s work. Thus, Christ’s death was potential atonement, not actual atonement. This is called universal atonement, a tenet of Arminianism. 3. God sent Jesus to redeem only the elect, the chosen church. Thus Christ’s death was an actual atonement, but only for those who will be saved. This is called definite atonement, a tenet of Reformed theology. In Him, Doc |

I would like to add that these beliefs regarding the nature of atonement are also components of other systematic theologies. You can, for instance, believe that Christ's death is able to provide atonement for all mankind, while not holding to other "Arminian tenets". Simply that something is a tenet of a certain belief system does not require that if you believe it, you must also believe all other tenets of that system. Likewise, it does not mean that if you are not "Reformed", you are automatically "Arminian", and vice-versa. Just 2 cents worth, no more. Love in Christ, Mark |
