1 | Why the change of word choice? | John 21:17 | Mommapbs | 78491
When the risen Lord appeared to Peter, He asked Peter three times if he loved Him (John 21:15-17). Yet, on the third time, why did Jesus change His choice of the word "love" from agapao to phileo? |

Thanks Ray, I'm just wondering how we love Jesus. Do we love Him because of WHO He is or because of what He has done for us? Is there a difference? Can any man/woman love God as He loves us? mommapbs
4 | Why the change of word choice? | John 21:17 | Ray | 79429
Hi mommapbs, I know that we love Him because He first loved us. I know that I am grateful that He saved me and I have eternal life with Him. But I also know that it has been a joy to know Him in the Scriptures and that joy is full already. Can any man/woman love God as he loves us? No, I wouldn't think so. We can love our friends as He loved His friends, but that would be a very hard sacrifice for most of us. John 15:13. But I also believe in comparing/contrasting Scriptures, notably John 21:17,18 and John 15:12 that Peter loved his Lord and would die for His gospel and for His friends. 1 John 4:7, "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love." From the heart, Ray |

Greetings Ray! Thanks for the reply. I do ponder this question a lot. I am continually amazed at the love of God. How inadequate is our love for Him in response, and yet, He welcomes every feeble attempt! In like manner, I am overwhelmed with how far short I often fall in my love for others. My prayer, "Lord, let me love like YOU do," requires that I let HIM love through me! In HIS love, mommapbs |
