Mommapbs, The more I look at this story of Jesus' appearance on the shores of Tiberias, the more I see. The loves and fishes remind of the miracle of the loves and fishes, a Echaristic image. The charcoal fire like the one where Peter denied Christ three times and now Jesus asks Peter three times if Peter loves him. Jesu says, "bring some fish that you have caught." Peter gets the fish, then shortly thereafter Jesus tells Peter, "feed my lambs... feed my sheep" Emmaus |

Greetings Emmaus! God seems to repeat a message or theme for me over a period of time.( Aside from giving me what I NEED to know, I think I am a slow learner !) Recently, that message has been from John 15:5, "Apart from Me you can do nothing." With that in mind, these are my observations on this passage: The disciples purpose to go fishing yet they catch nothing. How often do the plans WE make fail to produce the desired result? Jesus calls attention to their condition. ("Apart from Me you can do nothing.") Although we too may recognize things that are wrong, how often do we respond by ignoring, denying or making excuses for our problems?( ie, I was fishing in the wrong spot.) How often do we try to solve things on our own? (Thankfully, the disciples demonstrated the correct response - they obeyed God.) When they followed Jesus' directions, they caught more fish than they were able to haul in the boat ("THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM." 1 Cor 2:9) In considering the bread, fish and charcoal fire, see Is 44 and esp v.19 for a possible contrast. Jesus is the source of all we need for life and Godliness (2 Peter 1:3) "Apart from Me you can do nothing." He calls them to "dine" on what He has prepared ('Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. Rev 3:20) He asks them to bring some of the fish they have caught. (A reminder of their circumstance and HIS provision! - "Apart from Me, you can do nothing.") This same message is the one that Peter was given. "Tend, shepherd or feed my sheep." What is the "food" we are to give? The Word of God! It is the gift of God to us, it is not of ourselves - (Eph 2:8-9) again, "Apart from Me you can DO, nothing." Well, these are my thoughts for now. Isn't God's Word SO amazing! He speaks to us in a personal way, giving exactly what EACH of us needs! Blessings, mommapbs |

Hi Mommapbs, You and Emmaus have benefitted from studying something that you may not find a definitive answer for. It's fun to "dig" even if we don't find always find anything. I believe my daughter in college majoring in anthropology can relate to that. I'd like to offer my observations as well. John 21:15 has the words "Tend My lambs" in the NASB and "Feed my lambs" in the NKJ. I would think that the "feed" my lambs would give credence to the idea that Jesus was pointing to the fish that were brought to shore and to the fire. Jesus asked Peter, "Do you love Me more than these?" [the fish]. The other observation that I made was that John 21:5 in the NASB has Jesus saying, "Children, you do not have any fish, do you?" The NKJ says, "Children, have you any food?" And of course it was in relation to their fishing for food. With that in mind, the application for my mind is "Do I love Christ more than fishing (for eating or recreation)?" "Do I love Christ more than my job?" "Do I love Christ more than I love food?" John 21:17, "Do you love Me?/" Matthew 6:24, "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God/ and mammon." John 15:5, "for apart from Me/ you can do nothing." We abide in the Vine and we work for His kingdom. Matthew 6:13, "For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen." I trust that Peter felt the forgiveness for his denial when he worked for His kingdom. I trust that he could apply Isaiah 44:28 to his life and think of himself as a shepherd also. Isaiah 44:28, NKJ, "Who says of Cyrus, 'He is My shepherd, And he shall perform all My pleasure, Saying to Jerusalem, "You shall be built," And to the temple, "Your foundation shall be laid."" Thanks for your question, mommapbs. From the heart, Ray |
