1 | Jesus and the "good" theif at the | John 19:30 | the seeker | 187500
Jesus said to one of the men crucified with him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today, you will be with Me in Paradise." (Luke 23:43)Yet scripture also teaches that Jesus decended into hell for three days before he rose in to heaven. Why is this so confusing?

Do you remember the story of lazerus and the rich man that Jesus told. The explanation that I heard was that hell was divided into to parts. The "bosom of Abraham" side and the torment side. When Jesus went told the thief on the cross that he would be with Him in paradise, He was referring to the bosom of Abraham side of hell. It's the only explanation I have heard that explains what Jesus told the thief on the cross, and I think it makes since.
3 | Jesus and the "good" theif at the | John 19:30 | aggiejoe | 188810
Howdy, I think the thief on the cross will be in heaven just as everyone is that repents and acknowledges Jesus Christ as the Son of God. The difference in my mind is how Luke 23:43 is punctuated. My Bible makes a clear note that "today" in the verse should be connected with "Assuredly, I say to you" and not with the latter "you will be with me in Paradise." This is confusing to us because it doesn't flow with the way we would read that verse. But at that time "today" was merely there to add emphasis to the "Assuredly, I say to you". I think that your explanation might have stemmed from the apparent contradiction of John 20:17 - Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. Just my 2 cents. Joe |

Hi Joe, Welcome to the Forum. As to your statement about being confused: Why would the thief need Jesus to tell him that He was talking to him that very day? But it would probably be very pleasant for the thief to know that "today" he would be with Jesus in Paradise. blessings cheri |

5 | Jesus and the "good" theif at the | John 19:30 | aggiejoe | 188845
Howdy Cheri, I think you misunderstood my point. I wasn't saying that I was confused. I was explaining that my Bible has a note on that verse that says that the word "today" is adding emphasis to the phrase "assuredly, I say unto you" and it should not be interpreted to mean that Christ would be in Paradise that day. We know that John tells us Christ had not yet seen the Father on the day of the resurrection. So though we don't know exactly where he was during those 3 days, some assume preaching in Hell, we do know that he did not go to Heaven during that time. |
