rohitjohn93: I believe you have taken this verse out of context. Go back to verse 16 of chapter 16 and read to verse 27. In verse 23 to verse 24, where Jesus clearly says we are to pray in His name. After reading the complete context do you understand it now? Blessings. justme |

3 | should we pray to god in the name of jes | John 16:26 | ptr | 215628 | ||
ANSWER: WE SHOULD PRAY IN THE NAME OF JESUS BECAUSE IT IS A NAME THAT IS SHARED BY THE FATHER AND THE HOLY SPIRIT AS WELL. JOHN5:43 JESUS SAID,"I HAVE COME IN MY FATHER'S NAME AND YOU DO NOT RECEIVE ME; IF ANOTHER COMES IN HIS OWN NAME,HIM YOU WILL RECEIVE. MATTHEW28:19 ...BAPTISING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT. NOTE THAT THIS PASSAGE DISTIINCTLY MENTIONS THREE BEINGS,(THE FATHER, THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT),YET IT DID NOT SAY BAPTISING IN THE NAMES BUT NAME(SINGULAR). JOHN14:26 JESUS SAID,"BUT THE HELPER,THE HOLY SPIRIT, WHOM THE FATHER WILL SEND IN MY NAME WILL TEACH YOU ALL THINGS,ETC. COLOSSIANS3:17 WHATEVER YOU DO IN WORD OR DEED, DO ALL IN THE NAME OF JESUS. MATTHEW18:20 WHERE TWO OR THREE ARE GATHERED IN MY NAME THERE I AM IN THE MIDST. PHILIPPIANS2:9-10 THEREFORE GOD ALSO HAS HIGHLY EXALTED HIM(JESUS)AND GIVEN HIM THE NAME WHICH IS ABOVE EVERY NAME. THAT AT THE NAME OF JESUS EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW, OF THOSE IN HEAVEN,AND THOSE ON EARTH,AND OF THOSE UNDER THE EARTH. I DO HOPE THESE VERSES WILL BE OF HELP TO YOU. PTR. |

Welcome to the forum, ptr! Thomas Pettings in the periodical Reformed Worship issue #31 writes the following: The New International Commentary on the Nezu Testament (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans), p. 647 Morris cites Psalm 25:11 and Psalm 79:9 as examples. Petitions or praise that are spoken to either the Son or the Spirit because of their specific work or their person might be very appropriate. Morris adds two helpful notes. First, he reminds us that "for Christians, prayer is normally addressed to the Father in the name of the Son," and that such prayer is all-prevailing. Second, he states that any time we approach God in prayer, no matter which person is addressed, we do so "on the basis of the Son's atoning work" (p. 708). Jesus' death is the reason we pray, and because of his resurrection and reign, we can be sure that God hears and will answer. |

Thanks for your respones. I agree that praise and petitions to the Son and the Holy Spirit is appropriate. But lets not forget the true nature of Jesus whom we pray to. John1;1-The Word(Jesus)was God in the sense that the the Father shared the fullness of His own nature with Him. God alone is worthy of our highest honor and would not allow anyone other than Himself to be worshiped. For Him to let people worship one less- er than Himself,would be to violate His own com- mandment.Exod20:3,you shall have no other gods before me, Exod20:5,you shall not bow down before them nor serve them,Matt4:10,Jesus said,you must worship the lord thy God and Him alone you shall serve. Yet God highly exalted Jesus and gave Him a name which is above every other name(Heb1:4), that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow etc.(Phil2:9-11). Jesus makes it clear, that you cannot honor the Father unless you honor the Son(John5:23). He could receive honor and glory because it was first given to Him by the father. John8:54,Jesus answered,if I honor myself, my honor is nothing. It is my Father who honors me, of whom you say that He is your God. God bless you. |

Hi, Ptr... I'd be careful of making too fine a point on it, lest you fall into one heretical view or another. The Nicene Creed articulates things quite well. The church was blessed by our Lord to bring along a man named Athanasius at just the right time. The doctrine of the Trinity is a mystery. Any simple answer -- even an answer that seeks to be definitive on the topic -- is generally in error. Hence the value of the Nicene Creed. God is so gracious to provide what is needed when it is needed, through His Word, by the illumination of the Holy Spirit, for His redeemed.
