Matt: No doubt one would study the scriptures for themselves in a deep study first beginning with the gospels that tell the story of Christ Jesus as Messiah, Lord and Saviour. However, I disagree with you that it does no good to know what cults believe. Basically what they say about the death, burial and resurrection is key to understanding what they believe and taking that back to the plumb line of scripture we know exactly how to witness to them and proclaim the truth. A good website that shows does exactly that is 4truth.net. If I know what scriptures they use to twist scripture I will look more closely at those scriptures for the meaning myself. Indeed we are to focus on our study of scripture but if challenged we should be able to explain the scripture in question. A scripture that shows that believers did just that is Acts 17:11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. In fact we should use this principle for any and all that teach us scripture. |

Hi Val: Go back to the verse you use for your reasoning, then READ the Whole Chapter in Context. You will then plainly see, Paul was preaching first to the Jews of Thessalonica. They weren't some cult, having beliefs on the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. They just didn't believe, because they were Jews, they got mad, so leaving Paul went to Berea, there he did the same, went to the synagogue, preaching to the Jews, "they listened." Now we come to your verse. 11) These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. As you can see, he was speaking about the Jews of Berea. They were searching the scriptures, because the Jews were looking for their Messiah! They wanted to find out, if what Paul was saying could be true. The Jews of Thessalonica came to Berea, there they caused civil unrest, so Paul went to Athens. Paul again goes to the synagogue, preaching to the Jews, then preaches in the market, where philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, listened to him. He preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. Then from MARS HILL Paul gives a brilliant oration. Was it because he had studied (their beliefs), proving to them, that their beliefs were all wrong? Or was it because, by the Power of the Holy Spirit, that dwells inside of each believer. Be Blessed Matt. |

Hi Matt, I understand what you are saying Matt. I too agree that a thorough understanding of our blessed Holy Bible is the best defense and offense. I have been a christian many years and seek to witness to others as well as make a defense of the Holy bible passages when known "cults" use the passages in a way that dishonors our blessed Lord. Many bible students have worked and put in long hours in disecting beliefs of these known "cults". Their hours of hard work has helped those of us with limited time and experience to understand where it is that they err. Having this knowledge in my hand serves to give me a bottom line of what these "cults" believe rather than me having to study for hours to try to understand their thinking. Therefore with this resource readily available it is another armor in the true believer's battle against the enemy who wants to distort, change, add to, the truth of who God the father, Christ Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit is and has done. I am well equipped now to share with those who come to my door the gospel of Jesus Christ who purchased with His own blood my eternal redemption. In fact I had a couple of ladies come to my door a couple of times. I was mostly annoyed by them but felt impressed to share the gospel with them. I expressed my concern to the Lord that if He wanted me to speak with them I would the next time they appeared at my door. They did appear again a third time. This time with a brief prayer for wisdom, memorized scripture and a gracious approach I was allowed to share the gospel with them. They did not come back to my door again. However, I shared what I had studied, believed and was able to boldly proclaim the death, burial and resurrection of Christ Jesus my Lord. I knew what they believed about Christ because of the resources I named in a previous post. I believe a genuine daily study of the Holy bible is essential in this spiritual warfare. We live in an age that knowledge via the internet is abundant. I believe I would be amiss if I did not utilize all the resources the Spirit leads me to using discernment and the plumb line of the Holy Bible. I have studied Paul. He was probably the most intelligent apostle of all. If you look at some of his speaches you will actually see he knew quite a bit about the opponents of the gospel. He actually quoted one of their own poets. He knew about the Pharisees and Sadduces beliefs about resurrection and used them to his advantage when he was in a pickle. There will probably never be anyone as gifted as our beloved Paul. Heb 1:7 And of the angels He says, "WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS WINDS, AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE." Heb 1:8 But of the Son He says, "YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER, AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS KINGDOM. Heb 1:9 "YOU HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS; THEREFORE GOD, YOUR GOD, HAS ANOINTED YOU WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS ABOVE YOUR COMPANIONS." Keep the faith - Val |

Hi John, Thank you for your continued encouragement and your support is comforting and brings a smile to my face. Heb 3:12 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. Heb 3:13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Heb 3:14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end, Heb 3:15 while it is said, "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS, AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME." Heb 3:16 For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? Heb 3:17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? Heb 3:18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? Heb 3:19 So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief. Keep resting in our blessed Redeemer - Val |
