1 | Why Could He Not Do Many Miracles? | Luke 9:42 | BradK | 207163 | ||
Hi Steve, You're correct on the basic meaning of the word. Unfortunately, I can't shed any further light on what Robertson said. As he doesn't back it up, I can only surmise it to be his "commentary" on the passage. C.H. Spurgeon, in his Commentary on Matthew observes that, (13:58)-And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief-. "Unbelief bound his hands. Why should he spend his sacred energy among a people who would not be profited thereby? Where he would have chosen to do most, he was forced to do least, because he saw that all he did would be wasted on them. The Lord save us from such a state of mind!" A similarly related passage can be found in John 2:23-25. It truly speaks to the Diety of Christ- both seen and demonstrated. We see 2 things: 1. God has knowledge of one's confession (true or false) vs 23; 2. God has knowledge of our commitment vs 24 In vs. 24 we note that, "... Jesus, on His part, was not (did not commit) entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men" I trust this is of some further help, BradK |

BradK I do believe I have finally heard a really good answer to my orginal question in this post of yours. Everyone had excellent answers, however this does very much cover all the bases here - 1 Their unbelief was out of His hands. 2 He knew that they would not be profited by His continuance. 3 He Himself states that He was least received in His own home town, a place where it is likely He would have been willing to do much. I would not disparge the thoughts of all the others here, each of them contributed valuable insights. Thank you. Just a worthless son. blessings abound, bowler |
