1 | Did the Apostles have a choice? | Luke 5:8 | DocTrinsograce | 179227 | ||
Dear KumKum, You wrote, "Did the Apostles have a choice?" Everyone always has a choice. It is a part of the nature of human beings as God has created us. The incredible thing, though, is that God is fully in control. Nothing interferes with the ultimate fulfillment of His will. This is what is meant by the sovereignty of God. What this means to you and I, as CDBJ has asserted, is that God's promise is absolutely, ironclad certain! After all, what good would promises be if the one making the promise didn't have the power to fulfill them! Now in regard to the Apostles, they were specially ordained by God to the task of establishing the foundation of the church (Ephesians 4:11-16). But God doesn't carry out His plans hoping that things just happen to work out properly and that people cooperate with Him. No, His plans were formed long ago, and He works them out with perfect faithfulness and precision (Isaiah 14:24; 46:10), without being dependent on what men do (2 Timothy 1:9). A good example of God's working before hand is in the following passage from the Old Testament: Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations." (Jeremiah 1:4-5 ESV) If God did this kind of preparation for His people in the Old Testament, wouldn't it be amazing if He left things to chance for His only-begotten Son? I can't imagine worshiping a god who could have his whole plan thwarted by the whim of puny little man. Sheesh! Such a god wouldn't deserve to be worshiped! Instead, the Scripture introduces us to the Lord God Almighty, creator of heaven and earth... just, true, holy, and all powerful! In Him, Doc |

Doc, Thanks for an excellent post. You've summed it up well. I ought to print a copy and keep it with me when (not if) someone asks a question similar to the one KumKum asked. Grace to you, John |

Without Judas would I be a Christian? He who has ears to hear let him hear. Judas was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Judas? |
