1 | Baptism? | Luke 23:43 | garyw | 199064
Is it necessary to be baptized by water to be saved or can you be saved by believing in your heart and confessing with your lips that Jesus was the Son of God and died for our sins?
2 | Baptism? | Luke 23:43 | oldorange1 | 199065
the thief on the cross next to the Lord was not baptised. Come to think of it, where does the NT explicitly record the apostles being baptised?
3 | Baptism? | Luke 23:43 | lionheart | 199076
oldorange1, Greetings and welcome to the forum. Your reference to Luke 23:43 is not in context with subject of baptizm. Is there anything that explicitly says that they were not baptized. When conducting any kind of study one important factor can be time and here it is. Now with that in mind the baptizm that we would refer to would be John's baptizm. The baptizm in the name of Jesus Christ did not come until Pentecost. Now refer to Mark 16:15,16, Matthew 28:18-20 and Acts 2:38. Study out Romans 6 and see what Paul says. This isn't all of it but it's a good start. 2 Timothy 2:15 Let God's Word so we don't have to. In Him, lionheart |

4 | Baptism? | Luke 23:43 | oldorange1 | 199096
IMHO: The primary context of the question (which you only indirectly provided an answer to BTW) was salvation. As far as I recall, every example we have follows the order of; 1.) believe 2.) be baptised. Granted we should always consider the whole of scripture to determine our best understanding of a subject. But it goes without saying that the thief was not baptised in water (unless it rained like it did in the movie Ben Hur)and therefore by this verse alone (and because we'd have a serious contradiction otherwise) we can say it is not necessary. Consider also the ethiopian eunuch... It was he who suggested baptism, not philip. Again I assume from the record. Even though we have Jesus saying to believe and be baptised (mk 16:16) right after he says "if you don't believe you are condemned" not, if you don't believe AND are not baptised. Please next time, maybe you should just answer the questioner. Again IMHO.
5 | Baptism? | Luke 23:43 | lionheart | 199109
oldorange1, First of all I know what question was asked and I know it was regarding salvation. Of course it wasn't necessary for the thief to be baptized. Secondly I was replying to you not to the originator of the question. Now I have a question for you, Is baptism an option or a commandment of God? Mk 16:16, Mtt 28:18-20, Acts 2:38. Was the eunuch suggesting or doing what was scriptural. Why would Philip follow through on some thing that wasn't commanded by our Lord. In comment to your last statement, Absolutely if one does not believe they are condemed cause if they don't believe baptism won't enter the picture anyway. Just to make sure I'm clear here I don't promote baptismal regeneration. In Him, lionheart |
