Hi fwiaskycap, There is no difference. Here is the text for reference: Mar 4:5 And another fell on the stony place where it did not have much earth. And it sprang up at once, due to not having deepness of earth. Mar 4:6 And the sun rising, it was scorched. And through not having root, it was dried out. Mar 4:7 And another fell into the thorn-bushes, and the thorn-bushes grew up and choked it; and it did not yield fruit. Mar 4:8 And another fell into the good ground, and yielded fruit, going up and increasing; and one bore thirty, and one sixty, and one a hundredfold. This is from the JP Green Literal Version (LITV). The words "seed" and "seeds" were inserted by the translators. The Greek in each of these verses is the same: "kai allo epesen" - "and another fell" Some translators include the antecedent for clarity "and another 'seed' fell. I hope this helps! Greetings Mark! Excellent post my friend! There is on difference in the text that you highlight. You are correct that the word 'seed' does not appear in vv, 6-8. Rather, the near demonstrative pronoun 'allos' is used to refer to the seed. The difference is this: in vv. 6-7, the singular form of 'allos' is used, but in v. 8, the plural form is used. Interestingly, the same verb form (Aorist, Active, 3rd, Singular) is still used. If I remember correctly (my grammar is at my office), neuter plural nouns can take a singular verb. As for the significance of this difference, I would simply say that the fruitful seed was many. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Tim, Ok, you make me look deeper. It seems the Stephens, Schrivner's, and Byzantine Majority (which is the one I was looking in) show a singular "allo" in vs. 8. USB/NU show the plural "alla" in verse 8. They all agree on the singular "allo" in the previous verses. I think we've uncovered a major doctrinal difference between the manuscript versions! ;-) I've only just took my first Greek mid-term. I haven't a clue what verbs neuter plural nouns can take! Greetings Mark! You are correct. :) My textual apparatus is at my office. I'll try to check later and see what evidence there is for the readings. :-) I pretty much always use the USB and NA texts. Good luck with your class my friend. p.s. - I'll try to look up the neuter plural nouns as well. :-) I remember it, but I'm a little fuzzy on the precise details. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
