1 | who was Simon of Cyrene | Mark 15:21 | prayon | 41512
Greetings, Simon was a man from Northern Africa who began as a spectator, watching our Lord as He was led out of the city. The soldiers forced him to carry the cross. What an honor that must of been for him for all eternity. If simon was at first forced to become personally involved in the physical cross of Jesus, it appears later that he chose to take on the spiritual meaning of the cross for himself. prayon

Dear dasev, I am not sure what prayon's source for this info is, but I found the following to support what prayon stated as follows, SIMON 5. "Simon of Cyrene." A Hellenistic Jew, born at Cyrene, on the N coast of Africa, who was present at Jerusalem at the time of the crucifixion of Jesus, either as an attendant at the feast (cf. Acts 2:10) or as one of the numerous settlers at Jerusalem from that place (6:9). Meeting the procession that conducted Jesus to Golgotha as he was returning from the country, he was pressed into service to bear the cross (Matt 27:32; Mark 15:21; Luke 23:26) when Jesus Himself was unable to bear it any longer. Mark describes him as the father of Alexander and Rufus, perhaps because this was the Rufus known to the Roman Christians (Rom 16:13), for whom he more specifically wrote. The Basilidian Gnostics believed that Simon suffered in the place of Jesus. (From The New Unger's Bible Dictionary. Originally published by Moody Press of Chicago, Illinois. Copyright (c) 1988.)
