Does this mean the Father gave the gift of the Holy Spirit prior to Pentacost? | ||||||

Hello msg17, The Holy Spirit never indwelt or baptized anyone before Pentecost, however He did come on and fill individuals. So in this respect, I would say that one could ask for the Holy Spirit's presence. Consider David's request: Psalm 143:10 (ESV) Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground! This infers that the Holy Spirit will draw close. And again in Isaiah: Isaiah 44:1-3 (ESV) "But now hear, O Jacob my servant, Israel whom I have chosen! [2] Thus says the Lord who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you: Fear not, O Jacob my servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen. [3] For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. The assurance of the promise would have been enough for a Jew to ask for the Spirit to come. Steve |
