Can anyone tell me where in the New testament is says that we should not worry about following the laws in Exodus, like the eye for and eye thing?

Scripture ... Matthew 5:38 ... context vv 17-48 ... Ahenry9951, I used the wrong tense with Sheima. This passage is not about the Law (which includes Exodus), because the word used is "said" nor "written" ... this is supported by verses 17-19. We are not to break any of the Laws, so we must follow them. In verses 20-48 Jesus is getting to the heart. Showing the externals needed to be taken a step or two more. Hope this helps, Searcher |

Searcher, you do good work. No criticism or fault-finding is intended here -- merely clarification. Matthew 5:38 is a direct quote of Exodus 21:24. "Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot," Exodus 21:24 (KJV) In the NASB "Small Caps in the NT are used in the text to indicate OT quotations or obvious allusions to OT texts . . . Variations of OT wording are found in NT citations . . ." (from Explanation Of General Format Of The New American Standard Bible). Often the NT writers did paraphrase the material. Note: when they did paraphrase, they did it under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. (I know that you know this, Steve. But apparently not everyone who posts to the forum knows, understands or believes this. It is for the benefit of those people that I point this out.) Grace to you, kalos :-) |

Kalos ... So why did He say "said" not "written" ... I know we don't no. S

Searcher: "Matthew 5:21,22 *You have heard.... But I say to you.* See vv. 27, 31, 33, 38:, 43. The quotes are from Ex. 20:13; Deut. 5:17. Jesus was not altering the terms of the law in any of these passages. Rather, he was correcting what they had 'heard' -- the rabbinical understanding of the law." "Matthew 5:38 *An eye for an eye.* The law did establish this standard as a principle for limiting retribution to that which was just (Ex. 21:24; Lev. 24:20; Deut. 19:21). Its design was to insure that the punishment in civil cases fit the crime. It was never meant to sanction acts of personal retaliation. So again Jesus made no alteration to the true meaning of the law. He was mere explaining and affirming the law's true meaning" (MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997). Grace to you, John |

John ... Thank you for an "expert's" input. That is what shared with Sheima. Steve
