I would say yes, you need to be baptized with water, the first reason I would say why is that it was water that flooded the world in Noah's time and now it saves, as it says in 1 Peter 3:20-21: "when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrction of Jesus Christ." Now though I don't find this to be the most important reason, I find it to be the first reason. The most important is that when we are baptized, we are baptized into Christ's death. Romans 6:3-4 "Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life." To me this shows the importance of baptism, but it is important that it is water because that is how Jesus was baptized and we receive the Holy Ghost(The guarantee of our salvation Ephesians 1:13-14) just as he did in Matthew 3:16: "And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him" and Acts 10:38 "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power." The Spirit is a gift the we receive when we are baptized, we are not baptized into it, we are baptized into the death and ressurection of Jesus. This is only my view and especially with baptism there are many different views. I hope that this helps come to your own conclusion. Brother in Christ, Rex |

Rex: Thank you for pointing out that what saves us is not "a removal of dirt from the body", but "an appeal to God for a good conscience". And, as you have reminded us, we are not baptized INTO the Holy Spirit. Instead we are baptized BY the Holy Spirit INTO the body of Christ when we are born again. NASB 1 Corinthians 12:13 "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit." "Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His" ( does not belong to Him) Romans 8:9b. My prayer is that God will bless you and guard you while you are serving in the military in Afghanistan. As a war veteran myself, I have the greatest appreciation of and respect for you and your service to our country. Grace and shalom, kalos |
