Coffee, some people on the forum like to use the Word of God as a sledgehammer. It appears that Mr. Reformer Joe may be one of these people. I have noticed from most of his posts that he views those he responds to as opponents rather than people who are seeking a better understanding of Christ. This type of personality very rarely sees the problem with his approach. This personality type also tends to be very defensive when being rebuked, no matter how lovingly it is stated and intended. As you and several other members have pointed out, it is not what is being said, but how it is said that causes people to flee. When personalities such as Mr. Joe are involved in a thread I am reading, I attempt to ignore the implied acidity with which the point is being made and glean what the Holy Spirit is saying through the personality. Hope this helps. In Christ, Estelle For those who are like Mr. Joe and prefer points backed with Scripture, please study Gal. 6:1-10, Col. 3:12-17, and 1 John 4:7-12. Thank you. |

You wrote: "For those who are like Mr. Joe and prefer points backed with Scripture, please study Gal. 6:1-10, Col. 3:12-17, and 1 John 4:7-12. Thank you." Mr. Joe? You really don't have to be so formal. Let's look at these Scripture passages you mentioned. By the way, thank you for bringing the Bible into it rather than just stating your personal opinion. "Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted." --Galatians 6:1 The sixth chapter of Galatians is addressing brothers and sisters in Christ who have been caught in sin (and by the context, it seems that the person is repentant). The passage is not talking about non-Christian heresies, which Paul and Peter and John all answered much more harshly. In the very same book, the "gentle" Paul has these things to say about false teachers: "I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!" --Galatians 1:6-9 Those proclaiming a different gospel are to be ACCURSED. That would be RevC. "You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?" --Galatians 3:1-3 Calling those who believe false teachings FOOLISH twice in the speace of three verses? Is this Paul being a sledgehammer? "I wish that those who are troubling you would even mutilate themselves." --Galatians 5:12 How unkind of Paul! And yet this verse was inspired by the Spirit of God. Then we can look to Colossians: "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God." --Colossians 3:15-16 The passage you referred to here again deals with relationships between brothers in Christ. RevC denies the biblical gospel. He is NOT part of the "one body" mentioned here. That is the whole point of our exchange. Did you not even read the post which got cookie on her soapbox? I responded to a list of 30 items which RevC said "proves" the Trinity is a pagan doctrine not taught in Scripture. I systematically demonstrated how most of the arguments he made were not anti-Trinitarian, and that most of the ones that were took the verses in question out of their contexts. If you have not done so, please go back up the thread and read the "evil and inhumane" post that I left. By the way, regarding Col. 3:16, do you know what the term "admonish" means? That is what I have been doing to cookie, along with at least four other people who are much more "gentle" than I am. She basically has called all of us wrong, which points to a chracter flaw on her part (unteachability), not mine. Oh, 1 John: "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us." --1 John 4:7-12 These verses again are directed toward Christians and how they are to behave toward one another. No one has yet demonstrated to me how simply pointing out error and rebuking people who persist in it is not loving in a biblical sense. If it is not loving, we have a real problem, since Paul both rebuked shaprly and commanded that it be done with those who refuse to listen to the truth. Lastly, John is addressing discerning between false Christians and true ones, and it would be best for you to go back to the first verse of the chapter to see what John thought about accepting everyone who claims to be a Christian as one's brother. --Joe! |
