1 | the great commission/evangelism? | Matt 28:19 | Hank | 56362
Sandrider, if you mean -- and I sense that you do -- that not everyone can be on the "front line" as full-time evangelists, I certainly agree with that. May I offer a military analogy? During World War II, that terrible crucible, the fate of the free world hung in the balance, and on the outcome depended whether our nation would preserve its freedom or relinquish it to the will of a mad dictator. Yet those who served on the firing line could not have done so without the support of the folks back home. Farmers who grew crops; seamstresses who made uniforms; workers in defense plants who made planes and ships and weapons; ordinary citizens from every walk of life who bought war bonds and made sacrifices in order to conserve scarce and precious resourses -- these all contributed materially to the winning of victory and to bringing about a cessation of hostilities -- without whose help the front-line soldier could not have done his job. So it is with evangelical efforts. The missionary in the field, he who is on the front line as it were, cannot do his job effectively without the aid of the folks back home. The Christian who cannot go can still do much. He can give financial assistance; he can offer love and encouragement; he can petition God through prayer for His blessings and protection for the evangelists. In some manner, even though it may of necessity be vicarious, all Christians are called to be, and can be, effective ambassadors for Christ. --Hank
2 | the great commission/evangelism? | Matt 28:19 | sandrider | 56367
I like the analogy, it serves the purpose well. Do not think that I believe that some people are not called to be front-line evangelists. Perhaps only that there need to be more evangelists closer to home (not to say that we should not support the front-line).
3 | the great commission/evangelism? | Matt 28:19 | Hank | 56368
Sandrider, a resounding YES to your "Perhaps there needs to be more evangelists closer to home." Moral and ethical decay and decadence have led to spiritual bankruptcy and have become the hallmarks of modern-day America. I'm reminded of a fine little essay that Oliver Cromwell wrote some years ago called "Acres of Diamonds." The gist of the essay is this: A young man, seeking fame and fortune, sold his farm and all that he owned and went to a diamond field in a far away land to seek fulfillment for his dreams and ambitions. He did not succeed and returned to his homeland destitute and disillusioned. While he was away, the man who bought the young man's property discovered a rich diamond mine right in the former owner's own back yard. The message is clear, isn't it? We don't necessarily need to go to a foreign land thousands of miles away when the neighbor next door or across the street may be as lost as a goose in a snow storm. --Hank
