Hi, Karen... Welcome to the forum! That is a good question! Jesus was speaking Hebrew, actually quoting Psalm 22. Remember that this was Passover. Because of the first diaspora Jews lived all around the known world. Many would return to Jerusalam for Passover. However, over the years, Hebrew was generally lost to them. At that time most people from different parts of the world would speak to one another in Greek -- even the Romans used Greek with anyone except themselves. Nonetheless, because of reading of Torah, they would recognize the sound of Hebrew, but they might not get the interpretation right. (Imagine that you were a Roman Catholic in the middle ages. If you heard Latin you would recognize it, but you would not necessarily be a speaker of it.)
