1 | Is prophecy dead? | Matt 11:13 | whyndell | 1767
When they speak in tongues what language do they spesk? This is the only legimate use of tongues. Does everyone in the gathered assembly speak English? if they do then there is no reason for tongues. Re-read 1 cor 12-14. Tongues are not a sign of spirituality, and assuredly not a sign one has the Holy Spirit. The false doctrine there is a second "filling" is the cause of all the confusion regarding this issue. If this doctrine were legitimate the Apostle paul would have addressed the issue openly. Yet he does not, nor another writer of the NT. Eph 1.13-14 clearly answer the issue of the Holy Spirit, salvation is the only thing necessary. Even here Paul never says anything about a "higher level" of exprience. So I know this seems insensitive, you have never spoke inn tongues, tongues was always without exception an earthly language. As to prophesy,is never fortelling events, nor delivering a new personal message from God to the Church, that ceased when the Lord had the writers of the NT complete the letters He wanted written to address the churches needs and the needs of belivers. So if they are saying thus says the Lord they are in grave error and need to cease the "fake" or "false" activity. I do not debny the salvation of charismatics, as long as they have responded to the call of God. Whyndell |

2 | Is prophecy dead? | Matt 11:13 | Brent Douglass | 1789
I agree with Charis's choice of 1 Cor 14:39-40 to challenge this. This verse is an excellent admonition to Whyndell and-or anyone who would seek would seek to say authoritatively that tongues or prophecy CAN NOT exist today. This is basically equivalent to forbidding them, and directly violates Paul's command, unless there is a direct statement ending and condeming them in a later Scripture (which there isn't). It is probably safe to say that your (Whyndell's) experience with tongues was false and that MANY exercises of tongues are counterfeit -- coming either from the individual deluding himself, psychological manipulation on the part of others, and-or from false spirits. This needs to be taken into consideration whenever tongues or prophecy are practiced, and they need to be properly tested; this is often (usually?) neglected. There are good experiential reasons why many Christians have an initial distrust toward congregations where these gifts are practiced. This does not negate God's sovereign potential to use them if and whenever He so chooses. All of the following arguments come from 1 Cor 14, so I will simply offer the verse numbers (vv.nn) I'd also take issue with your suggestion that tongues are never for individual edification. I think 1 Corinthians 14 clearly states that the individual who speaks in a Holy-Spirit-given-tongue is spiritually edified (vv.2,4,14,17)in his pure worship or thanksgiving and that this is fruitful for his spirit (although not his mind, unless there is interpretation v.14). They are never for showing off, but they apparently edify the individual believer when practiced privately. I agree that they are real languages (vv.10-13), are NOT prophetical (vv.1-4) but rather for God-given prayer and-or worship (vv.13-17) -- with which others can then share and say, "Amen," if they are translated. For the record, I am a member of a church that does not practice these gifts in the assembly (to my knowledge). I believe I am somewhat objective. |

3 | Is prophecy dead? | Matt 11:13 | whyndell | 1797
Paul was not saying that one could not correct those who wereerrant, since for 3 chapters is exactly what he was doing. That was his whole point in chapter 14- those who were speaking in tongues not edifying the body were in error, they assumed that they were speaking spiritual mysteries, but no one could understand them. Now to take verse 2 and say that this means they were talking to god in a heavenly prayer language, is a serious error. There is no, and never has been a prayer language of tongues. As to my experiences they are just as legitmate as yours, which thanks the Lord Jesus Christ, who By the Holy Spirit delievered me from the Heresey of the Charismatic Movement. Say what you will, but you do not speak in tongues, and you never will. You do not have the simplist understanding of what tongues were for. I thought when I came on to this message site it would be of some biblical based discussions, but instead its another"tongue talker " network. Lots of luck will not respond to anymore of these messages. |

I'm not sure whether this is primarily a "tongue talker" network. It might be. From my reading of many postings, I thought it was a network of people who don't believe in the Bible doctrine of election. Also, though not mandatory, a belief in capitalization will go a long way on this forum.
