1 | Can A Christian disown Christ? | Matt 10:33 | flinkywood | 117763 | ||
Sir Pent, I'd read your letter once before. Now reading it again I hear a man I could trust. I was once like you, perhaps. Baptized Catholic before I could think, I learned my Latin, then walked away from the Church and its hollow-cold, echoing chambers. Later, having rejected the god of man’s image, sometimes even cursing that god, I nevertheless always felt “watched”, as if all I did were recorded and, I told myself, condoned by a god too goodly-immense to judge the foibles of a speck like me, like us. My god had a sense of humor; if he didn’t, then he deserved my indignation—after all, where had he been in the Holocaust? If he and I ever met, he’d either bid me welcome or get a piece of my mind. These conceits were challenged and demolished by events within my young family. The catalyst was the difficult birth of my oldest son, when I felt, vividly, that my love for him had come into my heart as a gift from God. 2 years later, I was led to Christ. We are now a Christian family. You said you “knew” that you had lost your salvation. I believe this, first because I believe you; second because I believe it—a gift received must be held (“Thy word I have hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Psalm 119:11); third because Paul believed it: “You will say then, ‘Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.’ Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear; for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either.” (Rom 11:19-21) Your post is a top five of all I’ve seen on this forum. Colin |
