Bible Question:
Steve, can you verify this? Dr. John Best of Dallas Theological Seminary teaches Greek. He says that the literal translation of verse 22 says, "Jesus breathed (sighed) and said, "Receive (future tense - when it comes) the Holy Spirit." I have not verified this through another source. Can you add or clarify this verse any? In Him, Bill Mc |
Bible Answer: Bill Mc, Tim or Charis may be able to give a better answer. My understanding is that the word "receive" is the translation of the Greek word, "lambano" which means "to take hold of". It is active tense, but does have to be future. John 14:18 may not fit, because I think He is talking about His return. But, would He leave them as orphans for more than the 3 days He was in the grave. There are two choices I see -John has one type of giving of the Spirit and Acts as another. -This is the promise of Pentecost as Dr. Best says. There are other views, I think. Steve |
